The Medication Aide is responsible for the safe and accurate administration of routine medications to residents under the supervision and delegation of a registered professional licensed nurse, in accordance with Michigan state regulations, facility policies, and physician orders. This role supports resident-centered care by ensuring timely medication delivery, monitoring for adverse reactions, and maintaining accurate documentation while adhering strictly to the defined scope of practice.

Responsibilities:
The essential functions of this position include the following. This list is not intended to be exclusive or exhaustive. There may be additional essential functions based on the unique nature of the position or environment.
- Prepare and administer medications and treatments except controlled medications, oxygen, injections, intravenously, parenteral or through any jejunostomy, gastrostomy, nasogastric or oral gastric tube, no initial dose or PRN medication as ordered by the physician and in accordance with state and federal regulations.
- In Michigan, a certified medication aide shall administrator prescription and OTC medications as approved only at the delegation of the registered nurse this includes oral, inhaled, topical, medications such as nasal spray or as drops or ointments to residents’ eye, ear or nose, rectal and vaginal medications.
- Review medication records for completeness of information, accuracy in the transcription of the physician's order, and adherence to stop order policies.
- Follow the rights of medication administration and infection prevention standards
- Verify physician orders prior to medication administration and clarify discrepancies with the RN Supervisor.
- Measure, prepare, and administer medications accurately and safely.
- Observe residents for side effects, adverse reactions, or medication errors, and report concerns immediately to the RN Supervisor.
- Ensure medications are stored, handled, and disposed of in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Notify the RN Supervisor when the resident is involved in an accident/incident or change in condition.
- Review the residents’ chart for specific treatments, medication orders, diets, etc., as necessary.
- Take and record vital signs as necessary.
Education and/or Experience:
- Must be, at least 18 years of age, or older
- High school diploma or GED required
- Completion of a Michigan Board of Nursing approved Medication Aide training program
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Current Michigan Certified/State Tested Nurse Assistant certification
- Must possess a state certified medication aide certification in the state of Michigan.
- Current CPR certification or CPR certification within 90 days of employment.
