Company Overview
Independent Energy Systems is a locally owned, family-run ('ohana) solar contractor headquartered in Honolulu, proudly serving Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island. We design and install residential and commercial solar, Tesla Powerwall battery storage, and provide ongoing O&M/SolarServe support, panel cleaning, and EV charger installation.
IEH has been named a Pacific Business News and Hawaii Business Magazine "Best Places to Work" honoree every year from 2022–2025, and our own team rates us 5/5 on Indeed. We're an AI-first, education-first company, and we believe our best talent can be grown, not just hired — 11 of our 20 current field teammates joined with zero prior trade experience, and six of them are Leads today.
"Solar Made Simple" isn't just our tagline — it's how we treat our customers and each other.
Job Summary
We're looking for an experienced Solar Installer Lead to run install crews and jobs from start to finish on Oahu. You'll preplan with the electrician, keep the crew safe and on schedule, and make sure every roof is done right the first time.
This is a leadership role on our Roof/Mechanical Track — and for Leads who want to keep climbing, it's also a deliberate bridge onto our electrical track and the EJ pathway.
Key Responsibilities
- Run install jobs on time and on budget — manage the crew, materials, and site from arrival to closeout
- Own every roof task through the J-box: mounts, racking, module installation, string maps, and RSD documentation
- Preplan jobs with the electrician and coordinate a smooth handoff between mechanical and electrical scopes
- Troubleshoot Tesla, Enphase, and Panasonic systems in the field
- Train and mentor L1/L2 installers; enforce safety and quality standards on every jobsite
- Keep real-time Company Cam documentation and proactively update the Project Manager
- Conduct site assessments and ensure every install meets local code and manufacturer specification
Qualifications
- Prior solar or construction leadership experience preferred; strong hands-on install background required
- Demonstrated ability to run a crew and a jobsite independently, on schedule and on budget
- Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces; able to lift heavy materials and stand for long periods
- OSHA 30 preferred (or willingness to obtain); strong working knowledge of racking, mounting, and RSD systems
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation (required)
- Strong communicator who can train others and hold a crew to a safety-first standard
