Special Education School Counselor/Social Worker
Supervisor: Special Education Supervisor and Director of Psychological Services
Grades: K-5
Job Summary:
The Special Education School Counselor will support Special Education students
in their learning by rendering essential services that recognize and resolve the
environmental and/or socio-emotional problems that obstruct the educational process.
He/she will provide counseling (individual and group) to elementary school students from
diverse backgrounds, in accordance with professional standards and ethics regarding the
delivery of clinical services. He/she will provide consultation services to school staff about
individual student needs and work collaboratively as an interdisciplinary team member to
devise plans for students through the provision of support services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as the liaison between Intensive Behavioral Health Services (IBHS)
- Identify evidence-based interventions to be utilized for group and individual sessions
(i.e. SEL curriculums, etc.)
- Provide individual counseling services to students in grades K through five through
the use of evidence-based practices. Contribute to the development and monitoring
of social, emotional, and/or behaviorally-driven Individualized Education Program
(IEP) goals.
- Provide small group counseling services to students in grades K through five on a
variety of topics, inclusive of social skills, coping, self-regulation, organization, and
grief/loss.
- Develop and implement professional development training for school personnel and
parents, as requested.
- Assist the IEP team, in conjunction with the school attendance officer, in addressing
truancy-related issues through home visits, the creation of student-specific plans,
and the monitoring of attendance-related goals.
- Participate in initial eligibility determination, as well as re-evaluation, meetings.
