Job Summary:
The Production Engineer will support the Scorpius project in Los Alamos, New Mexico, with a focus on transitioning complex engineered systems and components from design into fabrication, assembly, integration, and production. This role works closely with engineering, technicians, manufacturing partners, procurement, and project teams to resolve production challenges, improve manufacturability, and ensure work is completed in accordance with technical requirements, quality standards, and project schedules.
Responsibilities:
- Support production, fabrication, assembly, and integration activities for Scorpius systems and components.
- Work directly with design engineers and technicians to translate engineering designs into executable production and assembly processes.
- Review drawings, specifications, bills of materials, work instructions, and other technical documentation for manufacturability and production readiness.
- Identify and resolve production issues, design conflicts, material constraints, and fabrication or assembly challenges.
- Develop and improve manufacturing processes, work instructions, tooling requirements, and production workflows.
- Coordinate with engineering, procurement, quality, vendors, and technicians to support material availability and production schedules.
- Support design changes, configuration updates, nonconformance resolution, and implementation of approved technical changes.
- Provide technical support during component fabrication, equipment assembly, installation, testing, and system integration.
- Identify opportunities to improve production efficiency, quality, safety, reliability, and repeatability.
- Maintain production documentation and communicate status, risks, constraints, and technical issues to project stakeholders.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Experience supporting manufacturing, production, fabrication, assembly, or integration of complex mechanical or electromechanical systems.
- Experience interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and technical documentation.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, production planning, design for manufacturability, and configuration/change control.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot production issues and coordinate technical solutions across engineering and operations teams.
- Strong communication, documentation, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary, hands-on engineering and production environment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required DOE site access and security credentials.
Nice to Haves:
- Experience supporting DOE, NNSA, national laboratory, accelerator, nuclear, defense, or other highly regulated technical programs.
- Experience with low-volume, high-complexity manufacturing or production environments.
- Experience with precision mechanical assemblies, vacuum systems, pressure systems, electrical/mechanical integration, or scientific equipment.
- Familiarity with Creo, Windchill, or similar CAD and product lifecycle management systems.
- Experience with GD&T, design for manufacturability, configuration management, or nonconformance processes.
- Experience coordinating with machine shops, fabricators, suppliers, or other external manufacturing partners.
- Active DOE Q or L clearance.
Travel: This position is primarily onsite in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Occasional travel may be required based on project needs.
Compensation & Benefits:
The expected base salary range for this role is $110,000 - $155,000 USD per year. Actual compensation will be determined based on a number of factors including skills, experience, qualifications, and location.
