Job Summary
The Lead Neurology Technician performs standard and complex nerve conduction studies in the clinical setting. The technician will preform testing on patients that will yield information about electrical conduction of motor and sensory nerves to assist the MD in the diagnosis of the nervous system disorders. The Lead Neurology technician is also responsible for communicating when and what supplies need to be ordered for both EMG machine and EEG machine, maintains daily and monthly quality assurance tasks such as refrigeration log, eye wash log and pharmacy log. The Lead Neurology technician will preform both clinical and administrative tasks as assigned. The Lead Neurology Tech will assume responsibility for precepting new employees in the Neurology department as well as complete clinical competencies for the department. The Lead Neurology Technician will act as a clinical staff member and room patients, answer phones, assist with scheduling, complete medication authorization and any other tasks as assigned.
Responsibilities
The Lead Neurology Technician is responsible for delivering high quality patient care within the scope of the job description, as well as performing clerical functions as outlined. The Neurology Technician will assist with patient care under the supervision of the Department Manager. Areas of accountability will include, but not be entirely limited to, EMGs or EEGs, clerical functions, quality assurance and performance improvement data collection. Ensures proper and timely distribution of all test results to appropriate charts , nursing units, physician offices and all other affiliates, with no documented deficiencies. Demonstrates good time management skills as evidenced by high productivity. Performs all responsibilities and portions of tests independently. Interviews patients-always maintains confidentiality of files ( i.e. never leaves medical files open on desk or in the exam rooms). Obtains appropriate data for patient records; uses good interviewing techniques. Accurately maintains medical records, files and documentation. Explains test preparation instructions to patients and assists patients with questions. Always keep patient privacy and dignity foremost. Always address patients properly, as per established protocol. Always use two patient identifiers before any procedure. Maintains files and logbooks; files patient reports. Performs other administrative functions as required and in a timely manner . Makes quality improvement/cost containment recommendations. Assists in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement data collection as assigned. Obtains informed consent when releasing any patient information, according to hospital policy. Effectively cross trains in Phlebotomy and helps in department when requested. Successfully completes Phlebotomy competency within established timeframe . Has no procedure delays/cancellations due to inventory or equipment maintenance failure. Demonstrates good time-management skills as evidenced by high productivity. Performs other duties as required , completes all required competency assessments within the established timeframe . Attends mandatory in-services, staff meetings, and actively participates in self-education. Maintains required licensure and credentials. Accomplishes 80-90% of planned goals. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
BCLS. Extensive training or experience in use of Electrophysiological instrumentation. Demonstrated ability to proficiently perform procedures and instruct patients. Demonstrated knowledge of calibration, adjustment, and troubleshooting and ability to use the Evoked Potential and EEG or EMG machine. Demonstrates ability to effectively and pleasantly communicate , both verbally and in writing, with patients, physicians, and co-workers.
Heavy Work: Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
