The Construction Site Laborer is a full-time position that requires construction skills, but also the mindset and ability to interact with volunteers on a job site. Typically, a work week is from Tuesday through Saturday with Saturday being a day where the Site Laborer works with volunteers by helping, encouraging, and supporting volunteers on a house build site.
General Function: The Construction Site Laborer will be responsible for the implementation of assigned construction projects to support Habitat of Champaign County’s mission of eliminating substandard housing in the community while adhering to Habitat’s core values and upholding the highest levels of safety, quality, and community partnership set by Habitat for Humanity of Champaign County (HFHCC).
Reports to: Construction Director
Construction (30%)
- Perform all hands-on construction tasks as directed
· Prepare sites for volunteer builds
· Repair/redo any construction task performed below acceptable standards by volunteers
- Suggest potential advantageous building practices and material cost savings opportunities to management when identified
- Assist in the supervision of all site preparation and layout
- Work to ensure construction is accomplished in accordance with approved permits and plans; assist in ensuring that proper plan details and codes are followed
- Assist in training volunteers and partner families with construction tasks and guide them to use appropriate safety measures.
- Support the primary or second location with the Construction Director or Site Manager.
Volunteer Training (30%)
- Understand elements that contribute to successful volunteers and help ensure that volunteers have a consistently positive and encouraging environment--motivating them to return
- Support crews of volunteers in building homes
- Ensure appropriate safety practices are always followed
- Teach skills needed for build tasks to new volunteers
- Assist in identifying volunteer jobs and needs not currently filled; work with the Construction Director or Manager to fill those roles as appropriate
- Conduct regular quality control inspections
- Assist in the training of Crew Leads and volunteers
- Ensure that communication to volunteers and partner families is respectful, accurate, and timely
Project Development and Safety/Quality Control (20%)
· Complete daily inspections to monitor and implement quality control - organize and maintain build sites in preparation for volunteer build days
· Review House Plans and notify the Construction Director of any issues or challenges with the home designs; help resolve any issues that arise as a part of any changes or challenges
· Report to the Construction Director ways to improve the construction process
· Help keep build costs down by monitoring and minimizing waste
· Ensure that quality work is completed safely by volunteers
· Make sure that trailers are stocked with safety equipment as designated by the Construction Manager or Director
· Assist with project planning and computer support
· Assist with site safety inspections, daily logs, incident reports, and safety inspections
· Be safe, energetic, personable, and participative on every build site
Communication and Support (10%)
· Meet regularly with the Construction Director to monitor progress
· Keep each of the construction sites stocked with materials and tools for each specific task
Other Duties as Assigned (10%)
· Assist with Restore projects and warehouse maintenance as needed
· Work alongside Construction Manager or Director to assist with events as build schedule allows
· Fill-in for the Construction Manager when the manager is unavailable
Minimum Requirements
Education Requirements:
- A level of competence and knowledge similar to that gained through achieving a High school diploma
- At least 18 years old or older
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in residential construction
- Experience operating basic construction equipment and tools, ensuring proper use and maintenance
- Valid Illinois Driver's License and good driving record; able to drive pick-up truck with tool trailer
- Must be able to work as a team with a diverse group of people
- Must receive and maintain Habitat International’s Competent Person certification
- Must pass a criminal background check and sex offender registry check
Physical Requirements
- Ability to be on one's feet for extended periods, often on rough and uneven terrain
- Ability to lift at least 65 pounds regularly
- Ability to work on ladders and at heights up to two stories
- Ability to work outside in all weather conditions

Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour
