Staff Engineer – Geotechnical & Materials Testing
Location: Raleigh, NC with field assignments within the southeastern US

Position Overview
As a Staff Engineer, you will support a variety of geotechnical and materials testing projects. This role offers a balance of fieldwork—conducting site investigations, supervising test operations, and performing hands-on tasks—and office work, including data analysis, report preparation, and engineering design support. We provide training across a wide range of tasks, from subsurface exploration methods to laboratory testing procedures, so you can grow your skill set and advance your career.
Key Responsibilities
- Field Investigations & Testing:
- Assist with drilling supervision, soil sampling, in-situ testing (e.g., Standard Penetration Tests, cone penetrometer tests), and geophysical methods as needed.
- Perform or oversee pull/push testing for solar pile installations, soil density tests (nuclear or equivalent), and other geotechnical field procedures.
- Conduct construction materials testing in the field, including concrete slump, cylinder casting, and soil compaction verification.
- Safely handle and maintain field equipment; perform light to moderate heavy lifting (e.g., test piles, equipment cases, sampling tools).
- Office & Technical Work:
- Process and analyze field data; develop engineering design parameters and recommendations under guidance of senior engineers.
- Prepare draft and final technical reports, memos, and documentation.
- Collaborate with the Project Manager and Principal Engineer on project planning, scope development, and cost estimates.
- Coordinate with laboratories for specialized testing (electrical/thermal resistivity, CCRL-accredited concrete strength testing, etc.).
- Client & Team Interaction:
- Communicate effectively with clients, subcontractors (e.g., drillers, geophysical firms), and project stakeholders.
- Participate in project meetings, present findings, and respond to client inquiries.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Follow and promote strict adherence to safety protocols in the field and office.
- Ensure proper documentation of utility locates, permits (e.g., VA 811 coordination), and field logs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field.
- Willingness and ability to perform a mix of fieldwork (including occasional heavy lifting up to ~50 lbs or more with assistance/equipment) and office tasks.
- Comfortable traveling out of town for field assignments; travel is generally regionally based and scheduled in advance to minimize disruption.
- Basic familiarity with geotechnical principles, soil mechanics, or materials testing is a plus; we provide training for specific methods and equipment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite; experience with geotechnical software (e.g., gINT, GEO5, etc.) is beneficial but not required.
- Strong communication skills—both written and verbal—for report writing and client interaction.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate or ride in company vehicles safely over varied terrain.
- Commitment to safety, attention to detail, and a proactive, problem-solving attitude.
Physical & Travel Requirements
- Field Work: Expect a balanced schedule of field days and office days. Field assignments may involve:
- Walking on uneven or rough terrain.
- Loading/unloading equipment or materials; heavy lifting tasks will be supported with team assistance or mechanical aids whenever possible.
- Working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Travel: Out-of-town travel for field projects, typically within the southeastern US. Travel schedules are planned in advance.

Pay: $67,272.70 - $81,016.59 per year
