POSITION SUMMARY:
Maryland Works is a statewide nonprofit membership organization that expands employment and business ownership for individuals with disabilities or other barriers to employment.
Under the supervision of the Finance & HR Director, the Staff Accountant is responsible for the day-to-day financial operations of the organization, including accounts payable, bank reconciliations, journal entries, and monthly close. This role plays a critical part in ensuring financial accuracy, compliance, and transparency, while supporting leadership with budgeting, reporting, and audit preparation.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accounts Payable & Cash Management
- Process and manage all accounts payable, including invoice review, coding, and timely payment
- Maintain vendor records and ensure proper documentation and approvals
- Monitor cash flow and support cash management planning
Monthly Close & General Ledger
- Perform monthly bank and credit card reconciliations
- Prepare and post journal entries (accruals, allocations, adjustments)
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure accuracy of all financial data
- Assist in maintaining internal controls and accounting procedures
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare monthly financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow)
- Develop and deliver budget-to-actual variance reports with clear explanations
- Provide financial insights to support decision-making by leadership
- Assist program managers with understanding financial performance
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Assist in the annual budget process in collaboration with leadership
- Support periodic reforecasting and financial planning
- Track and monitor budget performance throughout the year
Audit & Compliance
- Prepare schedules, documentation, and reconciliations for annual external audit
- Serve as primary liaison for auditors during fieldwork
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and grant requirements
- Support preparation of Form 990 and other regulatory filings as needed
Systems & Process Improvement
- Maintain and improve accounting systems and workflows
- Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes and strengthen controls
- Support implementation or optimization of financial software
- All other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to relate well to staff, board members, and customers of diverse backgrounds.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, preferably with nonprofit accounting standards
- Experience with accounting software (e.g., Zoho Books, QuickBooks, Sage, or similar)
- Advanced proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, formulas, data analysis)
- Experience with audit preparation and financial reporting
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial staff
- Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple priorities
- Integrity and ability to handle confidential information
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS, SPECIAL SKILLS, CREDENTIALS OR LICENSES REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- 3-5 years of progressive accounting experience (nonprofit experience strongly preferred)
- Experience managing full-cycle accounting in a small to mid-sized organization
Pay: $60,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
