Paralegal – Medical Malpractice Defense Litigation

About the Firm
We are a Lexington, Kentucky-based litigation firm focused on defending hospitals, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers in medical malpractice and healthcare litigation matters throughout Kentucky. Our three-attorney practice handles complex, high-exposure cases from inception through trial and appeal. We are seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented Paralegal to join our team and provide direct support in all phases of litigation.
Position Summary
The Paralegal will work closely with attorneys in the defense of medical malpractice claims and other healthcare-related litigation. This position requires strong organizational skills, excellent written communication abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will assist with legal research, drafting legal documents, discovery management, medical record review, trial preparation, and courtroom support.
Primary ResponsibilitiesLitigation Support
- Manage case files and maintain organized electronic and physical records.
- Track litigation deadlines, court dates, discovery deadlines, depositions, expert disclosures, and trial schedules.
- Prepare and file pleadings, motions, notices, and other court documents in Kentucky state and federal courts.
- Coordinate service of process and monitor docket activity.
Medical Record and Document Management
- Obtain, organize, summarize, and analyze medical records.
- Create medical chronologies, timelines, and case summaries.
- Review and organize document productions.
- Maintain exhibits and document databases.
Discovery and Legal Drafting
- Draft discovery requests and responses, including interrogatories, requests for production, and requests for admission.
- Assist attorneys with preparation of motions, legal memoranda, briefs, witness summaries, and correspondence.
- Cite-check and proofread legal documents for accuracy and consistency.
- Prepare deposition notices, subpoenas, and deposition summaries.
Legal Research
- Conduct legal research using online legal databases and public resources.
- Assist attorneys in researching medical, regulatory, and legal issues relevant to healthcare litigation.
- Summarize research findings and prepare supporting materials for motions and trial.
Expert Witness Coordination
- Coordinate with physician and nursing expert witnesses regarding scheduling, document review, and case materials.
- Assist with preparation of expert disclosures and deposition materials.
- Organize and maintain expert files and correspondence.
Trial Preparation and Trial Support
- Prepare trial notebooks, witness files, exhibit binders, demonstrative evidence, and jury materials.
- Coordinate witness scheduling and trial logistics.
- Attend trials and assist attorneys with exhibits, witnesses, and courtroom presentation technology.
- Provide on-site litigation support throughout trial proceedings.
Qualifications:
- Associate degree, bachelor's degree, or paralegal certificate.
- Strong writing, proofreading, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
- Excellent attention to detail and professionalism.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Preferred
- Prior litigation or healthcare-related legal experience.
- Experience reviewing and organizing medical records.
- Familiarity with Kentucky court procedures and electronic filing systems.
- Experience working with medical malpractice, healthcare, insurance defense, or complex civil litigation matters.
