OPEN POSITION:
- Auto Body Sander / Prepper
WHO YOU ARE
You’re a detail-oriented surface preparation specialist who understands that a flawless paint job starts long before the spray gun. You take pride in producing perfectly smooth, properly prepped surfaces that set painters up for success. You’re comfortable working with a variety of grits, fillers, and primers, and you have the patience and precision to get every panel right. You work well as part of a team and are eager to continue developing your skills in the collision repair trade.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Surface Preparation:
- Sand, scuff, and featheredge damaged areas and repaired surfaces to achieve proper profiles
- Block sand body filler, glazing putty, and primer to achieve smooth, wave-free surfaces
- Perform wet and dry sanding using appropriate grit sequences (80 through 2000+)
- Featheredge paint edges and blend repair areas for seamless transitions
- Strip old paint, clear coat, and surface coatings, decals, using DA sanders, block sanding, and chemical strippers
- Remove rust, corrosion, and oxidation from metal surfaces
- Grind welds smooth and prepare welded areas for filler application
- Sand and prep fiberglass, plastic bumpers, trim, and flexible components for refinishing
- Identify and address surface imperfections including scratches, pinholes, and texture issues
Priming & Masking:
- Apply primer surfacer, epoxy primer, and self-etching primers as required
- Apply sealer coats prior to topcoat application
- Block sand primer to achieve final surface smoothness
- Mask and protect areas not being painted using tape, paper, plastic, and masking machines
- Apply fine-line tape for precise masking of body lines and trim edges
- Cover glass, trim, wheels, and other components to prevent overspray
- Remove masking materials and reinstall trim components after painting
Filler & Repair Support:
- Mix and apply body filler (Bondo), lightweight fillers, and finishing putty
- Shape and contour filler to match original body lines using blocks, boards, and guide coats
- Apply guide coats and use proper lighting techniques to identify low and high spots
- Support body technicians with panel fitting, gap alignment, and component removal/reinstallation
- Perform minor dent and ding repairs as needed
Quality & Documentation:
- Inspect all prepped surfaces for imperfections before releasing to the paint department
- Use guide coats to verify surface straightness and smoothness
- Review repair orders to understand scope of work and prep requirements
- Follow manufacturer repair procedures and surface preparation specifications
- Document work performed and communicate any issues to painters and team leads
- Maintain clean and organized work area
Safety & Compliance:
- Use all required personal protective equipment (PPE) including dust masks, respirators, safety glasses, and hearing protection
- Follow all safety procedures and OSHA regulations
- Properly handle and dispose of hazardous materials including solvents, primers, and fillers
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition
- Operate dust extraction systems and maintain proper ventilation
- Report safety concerns to management immediately
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- 2–5 years of auto body sanding / surface preparation experience
- Valid Driver’s License
- Proficiency with DA sanders, block sanding techniques, and air-powered finishing tools
- Knowledge of grit sequences, sanding techniques, and surface preparation standards
- Experience mixing and applying body filler, primer surfacer, and sealers
- Understanding of paint preparation requirements for various substrates (steel, aluminum, plastic, fiberglass)
- Ability to identify surface imperfections and achieve proper profiles
- Strong attention to detail and quality focus
- Good communication skills
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Stand, bend, kneel, and work in various positions throughout the day
- Must own basic hand tools (specialty equipment provided)
Preferred:
- I-CAR certifications (Non-Structural Technician, Refinish Technician)
- ASE certifications (B2 Painting and Refinishing, B3 Non-Structural Analysis and Damage Repair)
- Vocational/technical school training in collision repair or auto body refinishing
- Experience with waterborne and solvent-based primer systems
- Knowledge of various paint manufacturer prep specifications (PPG, Sikkens, BASF, Axalta)
- Experience prepping fleet vehicles, commercial trucks, or heavy equipment
- Familiarity with computerized mixing systems
Pay Range: $18.00 - $28.00 per hour (based on experience and certifications)
