NSC Staffing is seeking an experienced
Outside Machinist – Hydraulic Systems to support marine repair, maintenance, and overhaul operations in
San Diego, California. This role is ideal for skilled marine mechanics with experience working on hydraulic systems, propulsion equipment, auxiliary machinery, and shipboard mechanical systems in shipyard and maritime environments.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience diagnosing, repairing, installing, and testing marine mechanical equipment with minimal supervision while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality.
Position Overview
The Outside Machinist – Hydraulic Systems is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, overhaul, and testing of shipboard propulsion, hydraulic, auxiliary, and mechanical systems. This position requires strong troubleshooting skills, the ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications, and hands-on experience with rotating equipment, pumps, valves, compressors, and hydraulic systems.
Successful candidates will be comfortable working aboard vessels, in shipyards, and in various marine industrial environments while supporting critical maintenance and repair activities.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Systems Maintenance & Repair
- Install, maintain, repair, and overhaul marine mechanical systems and equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic, propulsion, and auxiliary systems aboard vessels.
- Conduct repairs on:
- Pumps
- Valves
- Compressors
- Purifiers
- Heat exchangers
- Actuators
- Steering gear systems
- Rudders
- Deck machinery
- Perform maintenance and repair of diesel, gas turbine, and auxiliary equipment.
Hydraulic Systems Support
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and test hydraulic systems and components.
- Diagnose hydraulic system failures and identify corrective actions.
- Replace and repair hydraulic pumps, valves, cylinders, motors, and associated equipment.
- Conduct functional testing to verify system performance.
Machinery Installation & Alignment
- Install and align shipboard machinery, equipment foundations, and associated components.
- Perform precision measurements using machinist tools and instrumentation.
- Replace, shim, align, and verify proper operation of motors and rotating equipment.
- Assist in determining repairs necessary to restore machinery to operational condition.
Testing & Commissioning
- Test and inspect mechanical systems during dock trials, sea trials, and operational testing.
- Verify systems meet applicable drawings, specifications, and operational requirements.
- Support commissioning and turnover activities.
Fabrication & Technical Work
- Read and interpret:
- Technical drawings
- Blueprints
- Specifications
- Maintenance procedures
- Lay out passage holes, supports, and equipment locations as required.
- Set up and operate portable machining and alignment equipment.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all shipyard safety regulations, procedures, and quality standards.
- Maintain and properly use precision measuring instruments, hand tools, and power tools.
- Ensure work is performed safely and efficiently while meeting production requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
Required Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Minimum 5 years of marine, shipyard, industrial mechanical, or hydraulic systems experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of hydraulic systems and mechanical equipment.
- Experience working independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and technical manuals.
- Experience using precision measuring equipment and alignment tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Marine Hydraulics experience.
- Marine Refrigeration experience.
- Prior U.S. Navy, commercial vessel, or shipyard experience.
- Experience with:
- Pumps
- Compressors
- Motors
- Alignment procedures
- Deck machinery
- Steering systems
- Knowledge of propulsion and auxiliary shipboard systems.
Security & Access Requirements
- This position may require access to U.S. government and military facilities.
- Candidates must be eligible to obtain base access credentials.
- Must pass applicable background screening requirements.
- Must present valid government-issued identification.
- REAL ID-compliant identification or valid U.S. Passport may be required for facility access.
Work Environment
- Shipyard, industrial, and shipboard environments.
- Exposure to machinery, confined spaces, elevated work areas, and varying weather conditions.
- Frequent climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, and standing.
- PPE required, including hardhat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toe footwear.
