Job Description
The Maintenance Technician is responsible for the continuous and effective freezing and frozen storage of food products and ingredient materials, as well as cooling the physical plant buildings. This is accomplished through the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of plant ammonia and nitrogen refrigeration systems and associated freezers, air conditioning, and chilled water systems.
The position includes operation of various refrigeration systems, preventive maintenance, and mechanical and electrical repair. The Maintenance Technician is expected to perform all tasks in a safe, efficient, quality-conscious, and cost-conscious manner while working cooperatively with supervisors and coworkers.
Using prior training and knowledge of Company equipment, the Maintenance Technician maintains and repairs assigned machinery and systems. Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, operation, mechanical and electrical repair, troubleshooting, and other tasks necessary to keep equipment operational and meet production and storage requirements.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate logs and records of operating results, equipment conditions, and problems.
- Analyze equipment information to determine appropriate preventive maintenance needs.
- Troubleshoot equipment problems, determine appropriate solutions, and perform necessary repairs.
- Use common maintenance hand tools and specialty tools to repair and maintain equipment.
- Inspect equipment through visual and audible observation and by reading gauges and other measuring devices to ensure optimal operating conditions.
- Read equipment manuals, blueprints, and other technical resources to support proper equipment operation and repair.
- Order parts and supplies needed to maintain or rebuild equipment.
- Maintain clean and orderly work areas in accordance with plant Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
- Follow all safe work practices and use required personal protective equipment to ensure personal and coworker safety.
- Perform maintenance activities in accordance with applicable codes and good maintenance practices.
- Follow all GMP requirements related to personal hygiene, housekeeping, wastewater, and solids management.
- Follow all product safety and quality requirements associated with assigned processes.
- Identify ongoing problems with assigned systems through data collection, downtime tracking, and personal inspection.
- Determine whether equipment issues can be resolved within the scope of personal training and knowledge.
- Maintain positive working relationships with Team Coordinators, managers, team members, and coworkers.
- Resolve problems and conflicts professionally and respectfully.
- Support team goals, attend team meetings, and participate to the best of one's ability.
- Follow all plant rules, policies, and the Company's Code of Ethics.
- Assist with orienting and training other team members on assigned tasks as requested.
- Use electrical, pipe fitting, pneumatic, and hydraulic skills to support other Maintenance Technicians as needed based on workload and plant requirements.
Skills & Experience
- 1–3 years of hands-on experience maintaining industrial ammonia refrigeration systems is required.
- Experience should include vacuum systems, screw compressors, blast freezers, storage freezers, condensers, and chilled water cooling systems.
- Experience maintaining nitrogen flash freezers is highly desired.
- Experience with Reevo and Frigoscandia brand freezers is highly desired.
- Electrical, pipe fitting, hydraulic, and pneumatic experience within a mechanical maintenance environment is preferred.
- Basic business requirements including attendance, punctuality, good work habits, and personal hygiene.
- Basic communication, reading, and arithmetic skills equivalent to a high school education.
- Technical training in:
- Ammonia refrigeration and nitrogen freezing systems.
- Mechanical and electrical maintenance of industrial refrigeration systems.
- Microprocessors.
- 110V, 120V, 220V, and 480V three-phase AC electrical systems.
- Pipe cutting, threading, and fitting.
- Conduit installation and wiring.
- Pneumatics and hydraulics.
- Thorough knowledge and hands-on skill in the mechanical and electrical maintenance of industrial food freezing systems.
Required Certifications
Candidates must possess BOTH of the following certifications to be considered:
- Level 1 Ammonia Certification
- Operator Level 1 Certification
Candidates who do not possess both required certifications will not be considered.
An
Operator Level II Certification is preferred and will be viewed favorably.
