Safety Manager (Transportation & Infrastructure)
Position Summary
Vertex Engineering is seeking an experienced Safety Manager to lead and oversee safety programs for transportation, transit, infrastructure, utility, and public works projects throughout New York and New Jersey.
The Safety Manager will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring project-specific safety programs to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, owner requirements, contract specifications, and industry best practices. The successful candidate will promote a proactive safety culture, conduct field audits and inspections, manage incident investigations, and support project teams in achieving zero-injury performance.
This position may support projects for agencies including MTA, NJ TRANSIT, PANYNJ, Amtrak, NYSDOT, NJDOT, and municipal clients.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Program Management
* Develop, implement, and maintain Site-Specific Safety and Health Plans (SSSHP).
* Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, project specifications, owner requirements, and company policies.
* Lead project safety planning activities during design, procurement, construction, and closeout phases.
* Monitor safety performance and recommend corrective actions where required.
Field Safety Oversight
* Conduct routine site inspections, audits, and safety observations.
* Monitor contractor and subcontractor compliance with safety requirements.
* Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and implement corrective measures.
* Verify compliance with permit requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, fall protection, confined space entry, excavation safety, and other high-risk activities.
Incident Investigation
* Lead investigations of incidents, injuries, near misses, and property damage events.
* Conduct root cause analyses and develop corrective action plans.
* Prepare detailed incident reports and maintain required records.
* Track corrective actions through resolution and closeout.
Training and Communication
* Conduct safety orientations, toolbox talks, and safety meetings.
* Provide safety coaching and mentoring to project personnel.
* Support development of project-specific training programs.
* Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Compliance and Reporting
* Maintain project safety documentation and records.
* Prepare safety reports, dashboards, and performance metrics.
* Coordinate regulatory inspections and owner safety audits.
* Assist with environmental health and safety compliance initiatives.
Risk Management
* Participate in Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), and Pre-Task Plans.
* Identify and assess project risks and recommend mitigation measures.
* Support emergency preparedness and response planning.
* Assist project teams in developing safe work procedures and risk control measures.
Qualifications
Education
* Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety, Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Health & Safety, or related field preferred.
Experience
* Minimum 10 years of construction safety experience.
* Experience on transportation, transit, rail, stations, tunnels, bridges, utility, heavy civil, or public infrastructure projects preferred.
* Experience working with public agencies such as MTA, NJ TRANSIT, PANYNJ, NYSDOT, NJDOT, Amtrak, or similar owners preferred.
Certifications
One or more of the following preferred:
* Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
* Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST)
* Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
* OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety
* OSHA 500 Trainer Certification
* First Aid/CPR Certification
Knowledge and Skills
* Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety standards.
* Strong understanding of transportation and heavy civil construction operations.
* Experience performing safety inspections, audits, investigations, and risk assessments.
* Ability to develop and implement project safety programs.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Excellent leadership, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office and safety management software.

Compensation commensurate with experience, certifications, and project assignment requirements.
