Position Summary: The Basic Skills Instructor reports directly to the Chief of Workforce Programs. The Basic Skills Instructor provides contextualized instruction in adult basic education to participants enrolled in Greater West Town Community Development Project (GWTP) vocational training programs. Instruction focuses on industry-specific math, reading, digital literacy, and workplace communication skills that prepare students to successfully complete training and transition into employment.
Position Responsibilities:
- Develop and deliver contextualized basic skills instruction in mathematics, reading, writing, and digital literacy aligned with GWTP vocational training programs.
- Design and teach industry-specific math and reading lessons that support technical training in workforce pathways, including manufacturing, construction, logistics, healthcare, clean energy, and other vocational programs.
- Teach foundational digital literacy skills, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, email, internet navigation, online learning platforms, job search tools, and employer-required technology.
- Integrate workplace documents, technical manuals, safety materials, measurement, calculations, and industry vocabulary into instruction to strengthen workforce readiness.
- Assess students' academic skill levels and develop individualized learning plans to address identified skill gaps.
- Provide individualized and small-group instruction, tutoring, and academic support to improve student persistence and program completion.
- Monitor student attendance, participation, and academic progress, providing coaching and interventions as needed to support retention and success.
- Collaborate with Vocational Technical Skills Instructors, Career Coaches, Case Managers, and Workforce Development staff to align academic instruction with technical training and employment goals.
- Utilize technology-based instructional resources, digital learning platforms, and mobile applications to enhance student learning and engagement.
- Maintain accurate student records, assessments, attendance, and required program documentation in accordance with funding and agency requirements.
- Participate in curriculum development and continuously improve instructional materials based on employer feedback, workforce trends, and student outcomes.
- Assist students in developing workplace communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and lifelong learning skills needed for career success.
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- B.A. degree preferred, or 4 years related experience
- Bilingual helpful
- Commitment to community service
- 3+ years of classroom teaching experience with non-traditional adult students preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of computers, internet applications, and common software (Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace)
- Ability to teach and explain technical concepts clearly to learners with little to no prior tech experience
- \Comfort working with a diverse adult learner population
- Strong communication, patience, and classroom management skills
