Core Responsibilities
- Team Leadership: Supervise shift operations, assign tasks to sales associates, and lead by example to ensure high-quality service.
- Operational Support: Assist with opening/closing procedures, cash handling, and bank deposits while maintaining store appearance.
- Inventory & Merchandising: Receive shipments, stock products, and manage inventory levels to prevent shortages. Implement merchandising strategies to create attractive displays that drive sales.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all staff strictly follow local, state, and federal liquor laws, including age verification and responsible service practices.
- Staff Development: Collaborate on training new employees in product knowledge, sales techniques, and store policies.
- Customer Engagement: Resolve customer complaints and provide expert recommendations on selections suitable to their needs.
Key Requirements
- Age: Must be at least 21 years old to sell alcohol and tobacco.
- Education: High school diploma or GED is the standard minimum; an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Business or Hospitality is often preferred for larger chains.
- Experience: Usually requires 2+ years of retail or hospitality management experience.
- Certifications: Often requires state-approved server training or responsible alcohol service certifications (e.g., TIPS or ServSafe Alcohol).
- Physical Ability: Must be able to stand for long periods and frequently lift or carry boxes weighing 30 to 50 lbs.
- Schedule: Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is essential.
Essential Skills
- Product Knowledge: Broad understanding of different brands and categories of beer, wine, and spirits.
- Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using Point of Sale (POS) systems, inventory management software, and basic office tools like MS Excel.
- Soft Skills: Strong verbal communication for interacting with diverse customers and staff, plus problem-solving skills for managing shift conflicts.
