Beginning hourly salary for a part-time TWP Driver is $16.50/hour. This position is not eligible for benefits, State Supplemental pay, or a take home unit.
JOB SUMMARY
Transport Transitional Work Program offenders in assigned vans and vehicles to and from various work sites, stores, church or other destinations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Drive transport vehicles safely and responsibly to assigned destinations; Follow daily routes;
Search or ensure that offenders have been searched and receive necessary paperwork before placing offenders into vehicles;
Deliver offenders to appropriate job locations on time; Pick up offenders from job locations and return them to the facility;
Transport offenders to off-site appointments such as medical/mental health appointments, vision/dental appointments, job interviews, physicals, thrift store, programming, etc.
Pick up offender medications from pharmacy when stop is on route;
Search interior of transport vehicle before and after each trip to determine if offenders conceal contraband;
Observe conduct and behavior of offenders to prevent disturbances and escapes;
Monitor offender behavior and actions for evidence of prohibited activities, infraction of rules, and unsatisfactory attitude;
Report observations to superiors;
Prepare written reports concerning incidents of offender disturbances or injuries;
Operate radio to receive instructions and notify superiors of work efforts in progress;
Maintain equipment in functional and clean condition;
Report any malfunctions in vehicular equipment to supervisors for corrective action;
Ensure vehicle has more than three quarters of a tank of gas before parking the vehicle after a trip;
Assist, when needed, in searching offenders as they are returning from work;
Assist in the searching of dorm areas as needed;
Maintain accurate and legible Transportation Forms daily;
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
May answer incoming telephone calls and routes to appropriate personnel;
Provide guidance and training to newly assigned transportation officers;
Cooperate with efforts of other law enforcement agencies in conducting investigations and joint law enforcement efforts;
Assist in providing warnings to the general public before, during, and after emergencies/disasters; and, assist in the facilitation of public evacuation efforts;
Perform all other duties of a “Correctional Officer,” if P.O.S.T. certified
Perform the duties of a “Deputy,” if P.O.S.T. certified

Education and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalency; six (6) months to one (1) year related experience and/or training; Class A-D Driver’s License;
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak effectively before groups of citizens and/or other employees;
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals;
Reasoning Ability
Ability to common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations;
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Level 3 Corrections Academy Required;
Class D Driver’s License Required;
Pass a physical to determine if medication or other factors may inhibit the officer from coherent decisions in regards to traffic laws and safety;
Other Skills and Abilities
Must possess basic knowledge of technical and professional methods, practices, and procedures in the delivery of law enforcement services; and, possess basic skills in the operation of personal computers, calculators, copy machines, and fax machines; basic knowledge of computer word processing software, business English, spelling, punctuation, and methods and techniques in record keeping and filing systems required;
Must have the emotional stability, maturity, and physical stamina to effectively handle verbal disparagements and physical aggression from hostile individuals and inmates;
Must possess the ability to perform job duties in highly stressful situations;
Must have the ability to deal courteously and effectively with the general public, governmental officials, and other employees of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office;
Must be able to work on 12-hour rotating shifts;

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment requires the jobholder to be constantly aware of his/her personal safety and to exercise the utmost care in ensuring his/her security and safety in the performance of job duties. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, and airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, and explosives.
The noise level is usually moderate.
