Duluth Edison Charter Schools - North Star Academy is hiring a full time Custodian to join our team! Custodians provide general cleaning, moving and repair of buildings and grounds. This position ensures a clean and safe work and school environment by ensuring rooms, hallways, and stairwells are kept clean and safe. This position often works alone in the building during evening hours and a high degree of attention to detail and trust is required.
Schedule:
Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week
School in Session hours: 4:30 PM - 1:00 AM (Summer hours: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM)
Key Position Specific Roles & Responsibilities:
- Sweep, mop and wax floors and walking surfaces.
- Shovel, salt and sand outdoor walking surfaces.
- Mowing and helping maintain grounds
- Clean vomit and other bodily fluids.
- Deep cleaning of classrooms utilizing CDC approved sanitizers on a daily basis as assigned.
- Move, set up and take down various tables and seating furniture.
- Remove garbage from receptacles and place in outdoor bins.
- Remove furniture from classrooms and offices so that painting and other maintenance tasks can be completed.
- Washing and preparation of walls and other surfaces in anticipation of painting.
- Cleaning vinyl wall base and stripping floors.
- Washing tables, chairs and lockers.
- Vacuuming and shampooing carpet and rugs.
- Washing windows and window sills.
- Washing out garbage cans and recycling bins.
- Cleans work area, tools, and equipment.
- Performs unlock and lock-up duties at the beginning and end of day, including setting security alarm.
- Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information, adheres to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations.
- Demonstrates familiarity with policies of the Duluth Public Schools District and state and federal regulations pertaining to education.
- Participates on committees and special projects and other related duties as assigned.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Language / Communication Skills
- Ability to read, write, speak, listen and understand the English language.
- Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
- Ability to effectively present and communicate information and respond to questions.

Reasoning Ability
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Availability & Attendance
- Work schedule may include hours up to eight hours in a day, or 40 hours in a week.
- Follows all attendance policies and procedures, including punctuality and proper timeclock or timesheet reporting.
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to apply concepts of basic math.
- The ability to analyze and understand data represented multiple ways (charts, graphs, etc.); identify trends or 'root causes' in data; and calculate with percentages.
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Completion of a High School Diploma or equivalent
- Experience in custodial work preferred but not required.
