Job Title: MOHS Lab Histotechnologist
Job Summary:
The MOHS Lab Histotechnologist plays a critical role in the surgical dermatology team, specifically supporting MOHS micrographic surgery procedures. This position involves preparing, processing, staining, and analyzing tissue specimens to ensure accurate and timely intraoperative diagnosis. The Histotechnologist works closely with dermatologic surgeons, laboratory staff, and administrative personnel to maintain high standards of quality, efficiency, and patient care. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, skilled in histology techniques, and familiar with dermatopathology and MOHS-specific procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive and accession surgical tissue specimens for MOHS procedures.
- Prepare frozen sections and slides for immediate microscopic evaluation by the MOHS surgeon.
- Embed, section, and stain tissue samples using standard and specialized techniques.
- Ensure proper labeling, handling, and storage of specimens to maintain chain of custody and specimen integrity.
- Perform hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and other specialized stains required for intraoperative assessment.
- Assist in the evaluation of tissue margins to guide surgical excision.
- Troubleshoot and maintain quality control of staining processes and equipment.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the MOHS laboratory.
- Monitor and maintain laboratory equipment, performing routine quality checks and reporting malfunctions.
- Maintain adequate inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents.
- Accurately document laboratory procedures, specimen processing, and results according to clinic protocols and regulatory standards.
- Follow OSHA, CLIA, and HIPAA guidelines to ensure patient and staff safety and confidentiality.
- Participate in continuing education and training to stay current with histology techniques and MOHS protocols.
- Work closely with MOHS surgeons and clinical staff to ensure efficient workflow and timely processing of specimens.
- Communicate effectively regarding specimen quality, procedural issues, and intraoperative needs.
- Contribute to a positive, patient-centered work environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Histotechnology, Biology, or related field.
- Certification as a Histotechnologist (HTL) preferred.
- Experience in dermatology or MOHS laboratory procedures strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in frozen sectioning, microtomy, and specialized staining techniques.
Work Environment:
- Laboratory setting with exposure to chemicals and biohazards.
- Requires standing for long periods and handling delicate instruments.
