Medical Biller / Revenue Cycle Specialist — Nephrology
California Renal Care, P.C. · Monterey–Salinas, CA · Full-time · $28–$34/hour DOE
Overview
Join California Renal Care, an independent, physician-owned nephrology practice serving the Monterey Peninsula and Salinas Valley, as our Medical Biller / Revenue Cycle Specialist. This is not a seat in a billing pool — you'll own the complete revenue cycle, work directly with our physicians and practice manager, and have real visibility into the financial health of a growing kidney care practice. Your attention to detail, command of medical coding, and persistence on denials and collections will directly drive the strength of our revenue and the experience of our patients. We value precision, transparency, and continuous learning, and we'll give you ownership and room to grow.
What you'll do
- Prepare and submit accurate insurance claims using current CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS coding standards
- Bill nephrology-specific services correctly: dialysis MCP (monthly capitation) codes, ESA/darbepoetin administration, TCM, CCM, PCM, RPM, and interprofessional consults
- Review documentation to ensure proper coding and billing compliance before claims go out
- Own denials and appeals end to end — work every denial to resolution rather than writing it off
- Follow up on unpaid claims through effective communication with payers and patients across Medicare, Medi-Cal, and commercial plans
- Verify eligibility and benefits, and manage prior authorizations
- Maintain clean, detailed billing records in Epic (we run Epic via Community Connect)
- Track A/R, flag aging trends, and report KPIs to the practice manager
- Collaborate with clinical staff to clarify billing details and resolve discrepancies promptly
- Stay current on changes in coding rules, payer policies, and billing best practices
What we're looking for
- 2+ years of medical billing experience; nephrology, dialysis, or specialty-practice experience strongly preferred
- A demonstrated denials-management track record — you can point to specific revenue you've recovered, not just claims you've submitted
- Strong command of CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS, plus payer rules and compliance
- Hands-on EMR/EHR billing experience; Epic strongly preferred
- CPB, CPC, or equivalent certification a plus
- Meticulous, self-directed, and comfortable owning your work in a lean, collaborative practice
Compensation & benefits
- $28–$34/hour, depending on experience
- Benefits: health, PTO, retirement
To apply, send your resume along with a brief note describing a denial or A/R problem you turned around — that story tells us more than any cover letter.
