Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled, adaptable, and motivated Commercial Landscape Crew Chief to oversee daily field operations and lead our landscape maintenance crews. In this role, you will bridge the gap between upper management and field execution. This is a dynamic position that requires wearing many hats; you will be responsible for driving efficiency, maintaining quality control, and ensuring safety, while also being ready to work directly alongside the crews in the field when needed.
This position reports directly to the Operations Managerand requires a strong work ethic, flexible problem-solving skills, and a commitment to teamwork.
Key Responsibilities
Crew Leadership & Management
- Supervise & Direct: Lead, motivate, and manage daily field crews to ensure landscape maintenance tasks are completed on schedule and to company standards.
- Training & Development: Train crew members on proper horticultural practices, equipment operation, and company protocols.
- Accountability: Monitor crew performance, conduct routine evaluations, and address any personnel issues in alignment with company policy.
Hands-On Field Support & Adaptability
- Working with Crews: Actively work alongside crew members in the field as needed to meet tight deadlines, cover labor shortages, or handle complex property details.
- Diverse Task Management: Tackle a wide variety of changing operational needs, which may range from routine maintenance and heavy labor to equipment troubleshooting and special enhancement projects.
- Leading by Example: Demonstrate proper technique, speed, and safety by maintaining a strong physical presence on the job site.
Operations & Quality Control
- Site Inspections: Conduct regular walkthroughs of commercial properties to ensure high-quality execution of mowing, detailing, pruning, and weed control.
- Resource Allocation: Coordinate daily schedules, assign tasks, and ensure crews have the necessary equipment, materials, and fuel for the day.
- Reporting: Maintain accurate daily logs of work completed, crew hours, and materials used. Provide regular operational updates to the Operations Manager.
Safety & Compliance
- Safety Enforcement: Ensure all crew members strictly adhere to company safety policies, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safe equipment operation.
- Weather & Heat Safety: Monitor field conditions and actively enforce safety protocols during extreme weather, ensuring crews remain hydrated and take mandatory heat-relief breaks.
- Incident Reporting: Promptly report any equipment damage, property damage, or vehicular/field injuries to management.
Qualifications & Skills
Experience & Education
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in commercial landscape maintenance, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or crew-lead role.
- Licensing: Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record (CDL is a plus).
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; a degree or certification in Horticulture, Turf Management, or a related field is a strong asset.
Core Competencies
- Flexibility & Stamina: Ability to pivot quickly between supervisory duties and physical, hands-on field labor throughout the day.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of commercial landscaping techniques, turf identification, plant care, weed management, and seasonal pruning.
- Equipment Proficiency: Expert knowledge of operating and maintaining commercial landscaping equipment (e.g., zero-turn mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws).
- Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills. Bilingual literacy (English/Spanish) is highly preferred.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Ability to work long hours outdoors in various weather conditions, including intense summer heat and rain.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs regularly.
- Constant standing, walking, bending, and kneeling throughout the workday.
