Position Summary
ArborActive is seeking a skilled Field Arborist to join our growing team. This position focuses on tree preservation, ornamental and structural pruning, tree planting, and proactive tree care. The ideal candidate is passionate about arboriculture, takes pride in quality workmanship, and understands that proper pruning and planting are essential to the long-term health and beauty of trees.
The Field Arborist will work on residential, commercial, municipal, and institutional properties, providing professional tree care services while helping clients preserve and enhance their landscapes. This position works closely with the Forest Stewardship & Restoration Lead and plays an important role in delivering ArborActive's commitment to science-based tree care and environmental stewardship.
Primary ResponsibilitiesTree Preservation & Pruning
- Perform structural pruning of young trees to establish strong branch architecture.
- Perform maintenance pruning of mature shade trees to improve health, safety, and aesthetics.
- Prune ornamental trees and shrubs using ANSI A300 standards and arboricultural best practices.
- Remove deadwood, crossing branches, and defective growth while preserving tree health and natural form.
- Develop species-specific pruning strategies based on tree biology and site conditions.
- Evaluate trees for structural defects and recommend corrective pruning.
Tree Planting & Establishment
- Install trees and shrubs according to industry best practices.
- Assess planting sites for proper species selection and long-term success.
- Install mulch, staking, watering systems, and tree protection as needed.
- Monitor newly planted trees during the establishment period.
- Educate clients on proper watering, mulching, and maintenance practices.
Tree Health & Preservation
- Identify common tree and shrub species.
- Recognize signs of insect activity, disease, environmental stress, and structural issues.
- Assist in developing recommendations for tree preservation and long-term care.
- Support ArborActive's integrated approach to tree health and landscape stewardship.
Client Service
- Interact professionally with clients while on-site.
- Explain recommended pruning and preservation practices.
- Represent ArborActive with professionalism and attention to detail.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work sites.
Safety & Equipment
- Safely operate chainsaws, pole saws, pruning tools, chippers, and other arboricultural equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance and inspections of equipment and vehicles.
- Follow ANSI Z133 safety standards, OSHA regulations, and ArborActive safety policies.
- Maintain accurate records of completed work.
QualificationsRequired
- Minimum of 2 years of professional arboriculture or tree care experience.
- Experience performing structural, ornamental, and maintenance pruning.
- Knowledge of proper tree planting techniques.
- Strong work ethic and attention to detail.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Preferred
- ISA Certified Arborist (preferred)
- Experience identifying tree species, pests, and diseases.
- Knowledge of ANSI A300 Pruning Standards.
- Connecticut Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification or willingness to obtain.
- Experience operating aerial lifts, chainsaws, and other arboricultural equipment.
