3G/4G Welder - Construction
Birmingham & Associates, Inc. is hiring an experienced 3G/4G Welder to support industrial construction, maintenance, and structural steel projects.
This is a field position—not a shop-only welding job. Applicants must be willing to work at industrial jobsites, travel when required, work at heights, and work overtime or weekends based on project schedules.
Job Type: Full-time, hourly
Location: Birmingham-area and regional industrial jobsites
Pay: Based on experience and demonstrated welding ability
Responsibilities
- Perform 3G vertical and 4G overhead welds on structural and miscellaneous steel.
- Produce code-compliant welds using FCAW and SMAW processes.
- Follow approved welding procedure specifications, drawings, weld symbols, and project requirements.
- Perform field fit-up, tack welding, repairs, and minor adjustment work.
- Set up and maintain welding machines, leads, grounds, feeders, and related equipment.
- Inspect completed work and correct unacceptable welds as directed.
- Safely use grinders, torches, carbon-arc equipment, and common construction tools.
- Work from ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, and elevated structural areas.
- Coordinate with foremen, ironworkers, fitters, riggers, crane operators, and other trades.
- Follow all jobsite safety requirements, including fall protection, hot-work permits, fire-watch procedures, PPE requirements, and job hazard analyses.
- Load, unload, stage, and protect company tools, equipment, consumables, and materials.
Required Qualifications
- Must pass company-administered 3G and 4G plate weld tests using the required welding process and approved WPS.
- Prior welding certifications or qualification records are helpful but do not replace the company weld test.
- At least two years of structural steel, industrial construction, or field-welding experience—or equivalent trade-school training with proven ability.
- Working knowledge of FCAW and SMAW equipment, consumables, machine setup, and common weld defects.
- Ability to read a tape measure, fabrication and erection drawings, connection details, and AWS welding symbols.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to climb, bend, kneel, squat, reach, and work in difficult welding positions.
- Willingness to work outdoors, at heights, around active industrial operations, and in changing weather conditions.
- Reliable attendance and dependable transportation.
- Willingness to work overtime, weekends, alternate shifts, and out-of-town assignments when required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current or recent AWS D1.1 structural steel qualification records.
- Industrial plant, construction, or maintenance welding experience.
- Experience with fit-up, gouging, weld repair, distortion control, and visual weld inspection.
- OSHA 10/30, aerial-lift, forklift, fall-protection, rigging, or signal-person training.
