POSITION: ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION TEACHER
LOCATION: Calvert High School
POSITION SUMMARY: The Alternative Education Teacher will instruct students who have difficulty functioning in the regular classroom setting. The teacher will be responsible for providing the prescribed instructional programs, providing an environment and activities which nurture the development of improved self-concept and self-esteem, preparing students to return to their assigned school with improved behavior, academic achievement and attendance.
REPORTS TO: Principal or designee, Director of Student Services
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:
At the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for:

A professional teaching certificate from the Maryland State Department of Education in the appropriate field of education; or
-
A conditional degree certificate from the Maryland State Department of Education in the appropriate field of education as outlined in the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR).
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS: (These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities and skills that apply to Essential Job Functions.)

At least three years of successful teaching experience preferred.

Ability to understand and communicate with both verbal and written skills.

Satisfactory evaluations and demonstrated mastery of the essential skills of teaching.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students.

Provides social skills and behavior modification activities for students.

Monitors and evaluates student outcomes.
-
Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff and community.

Develops, selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of assigned students.

Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional Development of children.

Provides students with the appropriate skills to successfully return to their original placement.

Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices.

Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities to provide an appropriate and effective Individualized instructional program.

Maintains regular, on-time attendance.

Collaborates with regular education staff regarding the use of instructional accommodations and modifications.
OTHER JOB DUTIES:
Duties listed are not intended to be all inclusive nor to limit duties that might reasonably be assigned.
Performs related work as required or assigned by the principal or Director of Student Services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Position requires significant periods of standing and walking and is performed in a typical school environment.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten (10) month position and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience applied to the current Calvert County Public Schools’ salary schedule for teachers. If selected for this position, the candidate is encouraged to enroll in direct deposit.

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include immediate supervisor.
State law requires that anyone hired after October 1, 1986, who will have contact with school children, must be fingerprinted and submit to a criminal background investigation. Federal law requires that a new employee must complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) in person before beginning employment. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a drug screen. Current employees of the Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these requirements.
