General Manager
Comfort Inn Redding Near I-5 - Please do not call the front desk of the hotel for this job
850 Mistletoe Lane, Redding, CA 96002 | Full-time, hourly | Tuesday to Friday 7 AM to 3 PM, Mondays out selling | On-site
We are a 70-room Comfort Inn on I-5 in Redding, owned and run by a family, not a management company. Our weekends are strong. Our weekday rooms are not full, and we want someone who can fix that.
Two things fill your week: selling and the front desk. You go after the companies that put people in Redding hotels (trucking, construction crews, sports teams, government and medical travelers), you close the business, and you work the desk yourself Tuesday to Friday. Everything else, you keep tabs on. You have 14 people across the front desk, housekeeping, and maintenance, and your job is to make sure every one of them is doing their best, every shift. You are not starting from zero. The sales machine is already running: the owner has been selling and closing for this hotel, the marketing material is done, the outreach has gone out to hundreds of local companies, and there is a pipeline of leads and accounts to work. What is missing is someone to run it full time. The owner will show you what has worked, including the pitch, the rates, and the accounts already in play. You report directly to the owner and you are the person in charge at the property. You are measured on two numbers: RevPAR, with a target of $70, and our guest score (LTR), with a target of 7.
What you will do
- Sell. Mondays are your sales day: out of the hotel visiting trucking companies, construction firms, teams, agencies, and other companies that send people to Redding. Tuesday to Friday, keep the calls going from the desk during quiet hours. Close every new account: rate agreement, booking link, first booking.
- Make every shift sell. Every front desk agent, on every shift, asks business guests who they work for and logs the lead. You assign the follow-ups, make sure they happen, and close.
- Work the front desk Tuesday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM: check-ins and check-outs, reservations, guest issues, daily cash and deposits, and shift reports in ChoiceAdvantage. Turn phone inquiries and walk-ins into bookings.
- Keep tabs on everyone. The front desk lead, the housekeeping manager, and maintenance report to you. Set expectations, check the work, follow up on what you assigned, and deal with it when someone is not delivering. Rooms ready and right, repairs done fast, complaints handled at the desk before checkout, housekeeping hours and supplies kept tight. You do not do their jobs. You make sure they do.
- Use AI tools every day and get the team using them too: prospect lists, outreach and follow-ups, rate agreements, guest replies, schedules, reports, and admin. We run this hotel with AI in the loop and expect you to as well.
What we are looking for
Required
- 3 or more years in hotel operations, including at least 1 year managing a team as a supervisor, front office manager, or assistant general manager.
- Experience bringing in business in any industry: sales, account management, or building customer relationships. You are comfortable closing at the counter, making cold calls, and walking into a business to introduce yourself.
- You know how to run a team: set expectations, delegate, follow up, hold people accountable, and deal with someone who is not performing. Be ready to tell us exactly how you have done it.
- A track record of moving hotel numbers: occupancy, RevPAR, or guest scores.
- Able to work on-site in Redding, Tuesday to Friday, morning shift, plus Mondays in the field. Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle for sales visits.
- Tech savvy. Comfortable with hotel systems, email, spreadsheets, and online booking sites, and already using AI tools such as ChatGPT or Claude in your work. Show us how in your application.
Preferred
- Choice Hotels or ChoiceAdvantage experience.
- Existing contacts with Redding-area businesses, especially trucking, construction, or sports.
- Hotel sales, group, or corporate account experience.
- Experience managing a hotel budget or P&L.
Pay
- $21.00 per hour, paid twice a month. Full-time, non-exempt hourly position.
- Plus $15 for every room night booked by an account you close, for the first 12 months of that account. Closing means you get the rate agreement signed or the first booking made, whether the lead came from you, the desk, or the owner. Commission is for business you win by selling; business that comes in through RFPs, bid sites, or proposals prepared by the owner does not count. Paid monthly after the stay is completed and paid.
- Plus $500 for each quarter the hotel's guest score (LTR) is 7 or better.
- Plus 10% of the first-year savings from any cost or productivity improvement you propose, the owner approves in writing, and that shows up in the books. Paid quarterly as the savings are realized.
- Realistic total earnings at target: $70,000 or more per year. Total pay is capped at $85,000 per year.
- Mileage for sales visits reimbursed at the IRS rate.
- Full details, including which accounts count, are in a written commission agreement you will sign at hire.
Schedule
- 40 hours per week. Tuesday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the front desk. Mondays are a full sales day out of the hotel.
- You are the only person on the desk during your shift, so the 30-minute meal period is paid and taken at the desk under a written on-duty meal agreement. Your two 10-minute rest breaks are taken away from the desk.
- Overtime is not expected and requires prior approval.
