Role Description
Correctional Nurse will provide nursing care and treatment for inmates and other detainees in correctional institutions throughout the state.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing, or possession of a non-renewable temporary practice permit issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing
- Ability to enter resident health data into electronic medical records (EMR) systems
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office products
- Available for a temporary assignment up to 6 months
Key Responsibilities
- Perform duties as a Charge Nurse, Staff Nurse, or Assessment Coordinator, providing nursing care and treatment services in a Commonwealth facility for individuals with mental or physical illness, injury, developmental disabilities, or dysfunctional behavior
- As a Charge Nurse:
- Direct and coordinate nursing care and treatment for patients/residents in assigned units, wards, or living areas
- Typically oversee evening or night shift operations
- Make assessments regarding staff utilization, supplies, and equipment needs
- Supervise paraprofessional and non-professional nursing direct care staff
- Ensure coordination of services, adequate coverage, and accurate record maintenance
- As an Assessment Coordinator:
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans
- Coordinate nursing treatment with interdisciplinary teams and nursing staff
- Meet with residents and families to assess patient conditions
- Complete documentation in compliance with federal and state regulations
- As a Staff Nurse:
- Provide professional nursing care and treatment in patient/resident care areas
- Support specialty nursing functions such as infection control, quality assurance, and risk management
- Exercise independent judgment in applying professional nursing practices based on oral and written instructions
- Maintain quality standards through work reviews conducted by Registered Nurse Supervisors, physicians, or dentists
Clinical Competencies Required
Candidates should be competent in, but not limited to, the following:
- Airway insertion and first aid
- Catheter insertion and catheter care
- AED operation and oxygen administration
- IV therapy, heparin lock insertion, irrigation, and tubing care
- Medication administration (oral, topical, suppository, inhalers, injections)
- IM, intradermal, and subcutaneous injections
- Venipuncture and dose calculations
- Vital signs monitoring and nursing protocols
- Participation in patient care planning
- Ambu bag use and peak flow monitoring
- Audiogram and tele-binocular testing
- Universal/standard precautions compliance
- Documentation of IV therapy and Medication Administration Records (MAR)
- Tuberculin testing
- Accepting and documenting practitioner orders (within scope of practice)
- Transcription of medical orders
- O2 mask and nasal cannula usage
- Parenteral management and secondary medication administration
- IV infusion pump and manual flow regulator operation
