Position Summary
The Pro Shop Retail Store Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, operations, and financial performance of the facility’s pro shop, ensuring an exceptional retail experience for players, families, teams, and guests. This role oversees all aspects of day-to-day retail operations, including sales performance, profitability, customer service, merchandising, inventory management, and staff supervision, while supporting the needs of hockey and figure skating programs and facility initiatives.
The Pro Shop Retail Store Manager is responsible for developing and executing retail strategies that drive revenue growth, maximize profitability, and enhance the customer experience. This position leads the recruitment, training, development, and performance management of pro shop staff, fostering a high-performing, customer-focused team environment. Through effective leadership, coaching, and ongoing feedback, the Pro Shop Retail Store Manager motivates staff to exceed sales goals, deliver exceptional service, and maintain operational excellence.
Additionally, this role ensures the pro shop maintains strong visual merchandising standards, appropriate product assortment, and inventory levels to meet customer demand and support Hockey and Figure Skating programming. The Pro Shop Retail Store Manager collaborates closely with facility leadership, Hockey and Figure Skating operations, vendors, and community partners to strengthen retail offerings and enhance the overall guest experience.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Retail Management

Provide leadership and oversight for all retail store operations, including sales performance, customer experience, staffing, operational procedures, and profitability.

Develop and implement retail strategies to achieve sales goals, improve product sell-through, and maximize revenue through pricing, promotions, and targeted marketing initiatives.

Monitor sales performance, inventory trends, and profit margins to identify opportunities for growth and operational efficiency.

Ensure exceptional customer service standards by fostering strong customer relationships and maintaining high levels of associate engagement.

Oversee skate sharpening, equipment repair services, and operational safety procedures to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance.
Plan and execute promotional campaigns, vendor events, product demonstrations, and customer loyalty initiatives to strengthen retention and attract new customers.

Buying, Merchandising & Product Management

Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors and sales representatives to negotiate favorable purchasing terms and maximize promotional and seasonal opportunities.

Manage all aspects of inventory control, including purchasing, replenishment, inventory turns, open-to-buy planning, markdown strategies, and profitability targets.

Oversee merchandising operations, including product ordering, receiving, pricing, visual presentation, and maintaining a clean, organized, and attractive retail environment.

Monitor inventory availability and booking deadlines to ensure adequate stock levels and alignment with seasonal demand.

Develop and manage a cohesive apparel and merchandise program that supports facility brands, travel hockey organizations, and special event merchandise, including jerseys, warm-ups, and family apparel.
Evaluate garment selections and decoration methods to ensure product quality, athlete performance, customer preference, cost efficiency, and seasonal availability.

Leadership & Team Development

Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and supervise retail sales and service staff to ensure operational excellence and a high-performing team culture.

Establish clear performance expectations, provide ongoing coaching and product knowledge training, and conduct regular performance evaluations.

Create staffing schedules aligned with business demand, programming, and facility operations.
Foster a positive, service-oriented work environment by leading through example and promoting accountability, teamwork, and exceptional guest experiences.

Financial Management

Assist in the development and management of the annual retail operating budget in partnership with the General Manager.

Monitor departmental financial performance, including expenses, payroll, margins, and operating results to ensure alignment with budget objectives.
Implement cost-control measures and operational efficiencies while maintaining service and product quality standards.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Retail Management, Sports Management, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum of five (5) years of retail management experience, preferably in sports retail environments.

Minimum of two (2) years of buying and merchandise planning experience with strong retail math and inventory management capabilities.

Extensive knowledge of hockey equipment and retail operations; figure skating product knowledge preferred.

Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to mentor, develop, and motivate team members.

Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Proficiency with retail POS systems and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as business needs require.
Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds.
