Overview
Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church is seeking a dependable, hands-on Church Sexton / Maintenance Technician to help maintain the interior and exterior of the church buildings and grounds. This role supports a clean, safe, welcoming environment for worship services, meetings, church-sponsored events, and community groups.
Responsibilities
- Open and close church buildings as directed, including adjusting lighting and thermostats for scheduled activities.
- Inspect interior and exterior spaces and report maintenance or safety concerns.
- Set up and break down tables, chairs, and trash cans for meetings, services, weddings, funerals, concerts, and other events.
- Perform light maintenance and minor repairs, such as changing light bulbs, replacing blinds, minor drywall repair, touch-up painting, and basic restroom repairs.
- Assist with seasonal and weather-related tasks, including snow/ice treatment, storm cleanup, lawn and shrub care, floor polishing, and carpet cleaning.
- Maintain cleaning and maintenance supplies and coordinate with the Parish Administrator and Property Team as needed.
- Communicate professionally with church staff, volunteers, guests, committee members, and outside contractors.
Experience
- At least 1 year of experience cleaning, maintaining, and/or caring for a building is required.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English for safety instructions, cleaning chemicals, and equipment use.
- Strong communication skills and a respectful, tactful approach with staff, volunteers, guests, and vendors.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, or varied hours based on church needs.
Physical Requirements
- This position requires frequent walking, bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching, climbing, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
- The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and push or pull up to 100 pounds.
- Work may take place indoors and outdoors in a variety of conditions, including dust, pollen, slippery surfaces, weather conditions, noise, fumes, odors, light equipment, and cleaning chemicals.
