SUMMARY DEFINITION
Under general supervision, the Campus security monitors Cadet behavior at the Oakland Military Institute (OMI) – College Preparatory Academy; patrols and checks facilities for security; performs light maintenance and/or custodial work; keeps records and makes reports; performs related work as required. This position directly reports to the Commandant.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES
- Use of good judgment in the application of OMI policies to each situation as it arises.
- Perform minor maintenance and/or custodial tasks.
- Monitor Cadets as they participate in routine non-classroom activities.
- Respond quickly to urgent and emergency situations.
- Quickly ascertain the hazards of confrontation and de-escalation or other emergency situations.
- Enforce OMI school policies and rules in accordance with the Parent/Cadet Handbook.
- Observe and manage Cadet behavior during before and after school activities, lunchtime, passing periods, and special school activities such as dances and athletic events.
- Refer Cadets to an administrator as necessary.
- Discourage disruptive and potentially dangerous behavior.
- Observe and control or report any damage to school property.
- Patrol the campus and areas where Cadets congregate by foot.
- Maintain active supervision inside and outside of the campus.
- Use hand-held radio for urgent communication.
- Locate Cadets on campus and escort to requested location.
- Detain Cadets or non-Cadets until the arrival of law enforcement personnel.
- Assist in the evacuation of buildings during emergencies.
- Conduct searches for weapons, drugs and alcohol in accordance with standard procedures.
- Informally discuss behavior and attendance problems with Cadets.
- Annotate all infractions, parent conversations and searches in Aeries.
- Check and respond to emails within 24hrs or one business day.
- Contact and check the identity of any unknown individuals on campus.
- Complete reports as required.
- Assist with entry and exit procedures (Gate Inspections).
- Manage lunchtime and afterschool detention.
- Consistent and regular attendance is required.
- Preferred experience in public safety or emergency response
- Preferred bilingual
- Perform other duties as assigned or requested by the supervisor or an administrator.
QUALIFICATIONS
The Oakland Military Institute – College Preparatory Academy determines whether a candidate is qualified based on fulfillment of prerequisites, relevant work experience, ability to perform the essential functions, reference checks, effective interpersonal and communication skills demonstrated by interview performance and/or writing samples, and achievement on performance-based assessments (if applicable) that demonstrate the candidate possesses the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities. Meeting the prerequisites only satisfies the initial screening process and does not indicate the candidate is qualified to perform the essential functions of the position.

- General concepts and characteristics of adolescent behavior.
- Techniques used in controlling Cadets.
- Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
- Routine record keeping.
- OMI school policies, rules and regulations.
- Methods for effective interaction with Cadets, staff and other adults.
- Safe working methods and procedures.
Ability to:
- Assume responsibility for the supervision and control of Cadets in a wide variety of situations.
- Adhere to and enforce OMI policies and procedures
- Respond appropriately to situations involving Cadet misbehavior.
- Speak clearly and distinctly.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Maintain cooperative working relationships with Cadets, staff, parents and the general public.
- Safely drive and operate a vehicle as used in this position.
- De-escalate volatile situations
- Recognize contraband to include illegal substances and weapons.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying.
Education/ Experience: High school diploma. Good general background and work history, some paid or volunteer experience in campus or security supervision, or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities. Individuals in this position are encouraged to participate in courses, seminars and workshops to enhance their skills.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Physical Requirements: Consistent mental alertness; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects of 30+ pounds; bending and twisting at the waist; reaching overhead and/or horizontally; dexterity of both hands and fingers while performing duties; sufficient vision to read, write and use technology; sufficient hearing and speaking skills to communicate effectively.
