Job Description
We are looking for a knowledgeable and engaging Human Geography Tutor / Instructor to help middle and high school students master spatial concepts, geographic models, and global patterns. A major focus of this role is supporting high schoolers navigating the rigorous AP Human Geography (APHG) curriculum and preparing them for college-level testing formats.
If you have a background in social studies, geography, or history and a knack for breaking down complex global socio-economic trends, this flexible role is a perfect fit.
Key Responsibilities
- Targeted Content Instruction: Help students grasp key units including population/migration patterns, cultural patterns, political organization of space, agriculture, urban land use, and industrial economic development.
- AP Exam Preparation: Guide high school students through standard AP exam strategies, specifically focusing on data analysis, map interpretation, and mastering Free-Response Questions (FRQs).
- Critical Thinking & Skill Building: Teach students how to apply geographic models (like the Demographic Transition Model or Von Thünen’s model) to real-world global events.
- Progress Tracking: Keep concise, accurate logs of student progress to identify weak areas and communicate growth effectively to families.
- Positive Learning Environment: Build strong rapport with students, helping them manage high-stakes high school coursework with confidence.
Job Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree completed or in progress from an accredited university (Geography, History, Social Studies Education, or related fields highly preferred).
- Experience: Prior experience tutoring or teaching high school social studies, specifically AP Human Geography, is a major advantage.
- Subject Mastery: Deep understanding of geographic core concepts, spatial analysis tools, charts, and maps. Familiarity with the College Board AP exam structure and FRQ rubrics is highly preferred.
- Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; ability to connect historical or cultural data to modern, real-world examples simply.
- Availability: Ability to work a consistent part-time schedule during peak after-school and evening hours (typically 3:30 PM – 8:00 PM weekdays and/or weekend blocks).
