The Arts and Humanities Division offers programs and courses in Art + Design, Communication Studies, Digital Media, English, World Languages, History, Interactive Media Production, Music, Philosophy, and Theatre. Additional components of the Division include the WHFC Radio Station, Owl Media, the LaCalle Chesapeake Gallery, and community performances.
The Assistant Dean of Arts and Humanities supports the dean in providing administrative management and leadership in the division and in furthering the academic mission and direction of the College. The responsibilities of the Assistant Dean also include: supervising part-time support staff; managing division logistics for dual enrollment; adjunct support; and working closely with division faculty and staff to provide support for initiatives and the assessment and development of curriculum and programs designed to foster student success.
Duties
Following are the types of duties of the Assistant Dean of Arts and Humanities, but it is not an exhaustive list of all that may be required in the role:
Support of the Division Dean
- Conduct research, implement best practices, plan assessment and tracking initiatives related to curriculum and program development, enhance student learning, and complete other special projects.
- Assist in the development of the annual course schedule in alignment with program plans and to support student progression.
- Manage and track the division’s dual enrollment initiatives, including scheduling, support for all teaching dual enrollment sections, relevant professional development, dual enrollment observations, and collaboration with others in Academic and Student Affairs with dual enrollment responsibilities.
- Assist in monitoring faculty and adjunct load, tracking enrollment, and making class cancellation recommendations prior to the start of each semester.
- Collaborate with the faculty to modify, assess, and develop courses and programs and to review articulation agreements.
- Monitor the assessment and review of all courses and support the program review process.
- Generate reports and provide data analyses to inform decision-making.
- Represent the division on internal and/or external committees as needed.
- Other duties assigned.
Support of Division Adjuncts
- Manage the adjunct applicant pool, work with Human Resources to advertise openings, evaluate applicant credentials, and coordinate the adjunct hiring process according to College practices and procedures.
- Oversee the onboarding and training of all new adjuncts in collaboration with subject matter faculty, Human Resources, etc.
- Assign adjunct teaching schedules based upon staffing needs and according to established practices and procedures.
- Conduct and coordinate classroom observations at all instructional locations, provide ongoing professional development in collaboration with subject matter faculty, address student concerns, and ensure adjuncts are supported in the performance of their duties.
- Other duties as assigned.
This is an exempt, professional staff position reporting to the Dean of Arts & Humanities.
Employees of Harford Community College, including instructors for online and virtual courses, must be residents of Maryland or the contiguous states of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia or the District of Columbia; non-residents are expected to relocate to meet this requirement.
