Job Overview
Commerce People is seeking a highly adaptable, strategic, and growth-oriented HR Generalist to oversee HR and payroll functions across our portfolio of disparate companies in the US and Canada. This role will serve as a multi-jurisdictional HR partner, ensuring operational compliance, managing multi-state/provincial payroll, and streamlining HR processes for a diverse corporate footprint. A successful person in this role will possess strong communication, critical-thinking and organizational skills, as well as a high-level of attention to detail. They will demonstrate the ability to work both independently and as a team player. The Human Resources Generalist works with all departments within the Company with supervision from the Human Resource Director.
Responsibilities
- Portfolio Management: Serve as the primary HR point of contact for multiple independent entities across various industries and locations.
- Employee Relations: Investigate and resolve complex employee relations issues across different company cultures and organizational structures.
- Onboarding & Offboarding: Standardize and execute the full employee lifecycle, ensuring smooth transitions for diverse workforces.
- Multi-Jurisdictional Payroll: Process and manage accurate payroll for US workers across multiple states and Canadian workers (across multiple provinces).
- Compliance Tracking: Manage US tax requirements (FICA, FUTA, SUTA, local taxes) and Canadian statutory deductions (CPP, EI, provincial payroll taxes).
- Benefits Administration: Oversee health, retirement, and ancillary benefits programs tailored to different business units and legal regions.
- Employee Law Mastery: Ensure absolute legal compliance with US Federal / State laws (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEOC) and Canadian Federal/Provincial Employment Standards Acts (ESA).
- Policy Harmonization: Review, update, and maintain distinct employee handbooks, contracts, and workplace policies for each portfolio company.
- Health & Safety: Monitor workers’ compensation claims (US) and provisional safety boards like WSIB/WorkSafeBC (Canada).
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications
- Experience: 4 to 6 years of progressive HR experience, preferably within a PEO, shared service model, or a multi-entity corporation.
- Payroll Expertise: Proven hands-on experience running payroll in both the US and Canada using modern platforms (Paychex, Payworks, etc.)
- Cross-Border Knowledge: Solid understanding of the legal differences between US employment-at-will and Canadian common law/provincial statutory notice requirements.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or related field. HR Certification (SHRM-CP or other) preferred.
- Leadership Mindset: Strong analytical, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Adaptability: Ability to rapidly switch context between different company environments, industries, and management styles.
- Confidentiality and Discretion: Proven ability to be discrete and maintain both employee and company confidentiality.
Pay: $60,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
