Overview
The Machine Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing production machinery and automation systems used in a manufacturing environment. This role requires strong mechanical and electrical aptitude, with the ability to read schematics, interpret technical manuals, and ensure equipment uptime through preventive and corrective maintenance. The technician will support equipment rebuilds, assist with installations, and contribute to continuous improvement efforts across the production floor.
Responsibilities
- Machine Troubleshooting & Repair
- Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues on manufacturing equipment such as injection molding machines, conveyor systems, robotic arms, packaging lines, blow molders, and auxiliary systems.
- Respond to machine breakdowns quickly and effectively to minimize downtime.
Electrical Support
- Read schematics and ladder logic to diagnose faults in circuits and components.
- Install or repair wiring, switches, sensors, and motor starters as needed.
- Run conduit and wire for new machine installations or modifications.
Preventive Maintenance
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance tasks to extend equipment life and ensure reliable operation.
- Maintain accurate records of completed maintenance work.
Mechanical Maintenance
- Replace or rebuild components such as bearings, seals, shafts, gearboxes, motors, and cylinders.
- Lubricate and align moving parts for optimal performance.
Control Systems
- Troubleshoot and replace basic control components including proximity sensors, photo eyes, PLC input/output modules, and pushbuttons.
- Support minor PLC troubleshooting and provide feedback to automation engineers when advanced support is needed.
Equipment Installations
- Assist with the setup and installation of new machinery and production lines.
- Collaborate with engineers and project managers on layout, utility connections, and machine modifications.
Fabrication and Assembly
- Use shop equipment such as grinders, drill presses, and cutting torches to fabricate brackets, guards, or repair parts as needed.
- Perform light welding tasks as needed.
CMMS Use
- Document work performed and parts used through the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Open, update, and close work orders accurately and in a timely manner.
Safety & Housekeeping
- Maintain a safe and organized work area; adhere to all safety procedures and use appropriate PPE.
- Report unsafe conditions and assist in promoting a safety-first culture.
Team Support & Communication
- Collaborate with production and engineering teams to ensure machines meet quality and efficiency expectations.
- Train or support less experienced maintenance technicians when necessary.
Emergency Response
- Be available to support critical breakdowns as part of a rotating on-call schedule or during off-hours when needed.
Qualifications
- Experience: 5+ years of working with industrial hydraulics. 5+ years of hands-on maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably with plastics or automated machinery.
- Technical Skills: Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Control Systems: Familiarity with PLCs and both AC/DC motor controls is a plus.
- Fabrication: Basic welding and metal fabrication skills preferred.
- Schematics: Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and electrical schematics.
- Tools: Proficiency with hand tools, multimeters, and machine shop equipment.
- Education: Technical degree or certification in industrial maintenance, electromechanical systems, or related field preferred; equivalent work experience accepted.
