Job Summary: The County Assessor Field Deputy is responsible for conducting field inspections and gathering data to assist in the accurate valuation of real and personal property within the county for taxation purposes. This role requires a balance of independent fieldwork and administrative reporting to ensure compliance with local and state property tax laws and regulations. This is a safety sensitive position, with exposure to extreme temperatures, animals & disgruntled individuals.
Key Responsibilities: Conduct on-site inspections of residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial properties. Measure, photograph, and document physical characteristics of properties and improvements. Verify and update property records, including dimensions, use, condition, and occupancy. Record and enter field data into computerized appraisal systems and GIS databases. Assist in determining property classifications and values in accordance with established guidelines and procedures. Prepare reports and documentation to support property assessments and valuations. Investigate and respond to taxpayer inquiries and complaints regarding property assessments. Support reappraisal and reassessment cycles as required by law. Testify at assessment appeals hearings as needed. Perform other duties as assigned by the Assessor or supervisory staff.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED required. Previous experience in property appraisal, real estate, construction, or a related field is highly desirable but not mandatory.
Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. Must be able to obtain any required certification or training per state or county standards within a specified time frame.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Basic understanding of property valuation, real estate markets, and construction terminology. Strong observational and measurement skills. Proficiency with computers and data entry tools. Ability to read and interpret maps. Strong communication and customer service skills. Ability to work independently in varying weather conditions and terrains.
Working Conditions: Extensive fieldwork, including driving a County vehicle to various properties across the county. Exposure to a variety of environmental conditions, including uneven terrain and inclement weather. Office-based data entry and reporting duties as needed. This is a position that requires a lot of walking and can be physically demanding.
