YellowBird is hiring an experienced Safety Manager for a project-based contract opportunity supporting active transit and commuter rail projects in the Washington, D.C. Metro area.
This is an excellent opportunity for a senior safety professional with transportation or transit experience who is comfortable operating independently and serving as the primary safety representative on active project sites.
Compensation:
$100/hour – 1099 Independent Contractor
Approximately 40 hours per week
Rotating day and night shifts
Work may take place across DC Metro, commuter rail, streetcar, and related transit project sites.
Contract Duration: Initial 4-month project-based engagement, with the potential for extension based on ongoing project needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary on-site safety representative across transit project sites
- Conduct contractor safety reviews and help ensure compliance with project and contract requirements
- Lead incident reporting, investigations, and corrective actions
- Monitor and enforce PPE requirements across crews and subcontractors
- Work independently as the sole safety lead when required
- Coordinate with project leadership, contractors, and field personnel to maintain a strong safety culture
- Support safety compliance across active transit and rail operations
Required Qualifications:
- BCSP certification – CHST minimum
- CSP or ASP certification preferred
- Previous transportation, transit, rail, or similar infrastructure safety experience
- Ability to work rotating day and night shifts
- Strong incident investigation and safety compliance experience
- Ability to operate independently and confidently as the primary safety professional on site
- DC Metro, commuter rail, or streetcar safety experience is highly desirable.

- Hired & Non-Owned Auto Insurance: Provides secondary coverage for qualifying incidents related to driving to, from, or during YellowBird work. The Professional's personal auto insurance remains primary.
1099 Independent Contractor Position:
This opportunity is a 1099 independent contractor engagement. YellowBird does not withhold taxes, and Professionals are responsible for their own tax obligations.
Compensation is a blended hourly rate of $100/hour with no overtime premium. YellowBird manages client billing and provides occupational accident, professional liability, and hired/non-owned auto insurance coverage for active engagements.
