Position Overview
CASE Construction is hiring an experienced Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic to support our crews and equipment working north of Indianapolis.
The primary responsibility of this position is keeping our northern crews running. You will respond to equipment breakdowns, perform preventative maintenance in the field, and diagnose problems before equipment downtime turns into a lost workday.
This position is best suited for someone who lives in or near the north Indianapolis, Anderson, or Muncie area. Most work will be performed in the field at CASE jobsites and equipment locations throughout the northern territory.
Occasional travel to our main shop in Edinburgh, Indiana, will be required for larger repairs, scheduled maintenance, training, parts coordination, and days when field-service demand is lighter.
CASE will provide a dedicated field mechanic service truck and fuel. The mechanic will be expected to provide and maintain their own professional hand tools. Larger specialty tools and shop equipment will be provided by the company as needed.
This is not an entry-level position. We need someone who can work independently, diagnose problems accurately, make practical repair decisions, and communicate clearly with operators, foremen, and our shop team.
Qualifications
- At least three years of professional experience repairing heavy equipment, diesel trucks, construction equipment, agricultural equipment, or a mixed commercial fleet.
- Strong diagnostic ability and the ability to identify the actual cause of a mechanical problem.
- Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, brakes, and drivetrains.
- Ability to perform repairs independently in a mobile or jobsite environment.
- Must own a professional set of mechanic’s hand tools suitable for daily equipment and truck repairs.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record are required.
- Class A CDL is preferred but not required.
- Welding and fabrication experience is preferred.
- Experience using scan tools, diagnostic software, multimeters, and electrical testing equipment is preferred.
- Ability to communicate clearly with operators, foremen, vendors, and other mechanics.
- Ability to safely lift and handle parts, tools, and equipment commonly involved in heavy-equipment repair.
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather and jobsite conditions.
- Willingness to travel throughout the assigned northern territory.
- Willingness to travel occasionally to the CASE Construction shop in Edinburgh, Indiana.
- Availability for early starts, overtime, and occasional after-hours or weekend service calls.
A technical degree, manufacturer certification, or ASE certification is helpful but not required. Actual experience, diagnostic skill, dependability, and judgment matter more than a specific degree or certification.
Equipment You Will Work On
CASE operates a varied construction fleet that includes:
- Skid steers and compact track loaders
- Backhoes and excavators
- Asphalt pavers, rollers, and milling equipment
- Concrete and asphalt saws
- Crack-sealing and pavement-maintenance equipment
- Air compressors and small construction equipment
- Pickup trucks and service trucks
- Dump trucks and tri-axle trucks
- Lowboys, dump trailers, and utility trailers
Experience with every type of equipment is not required. The right candidate must have a strong mechanical foundation and be willing to learn equipment they have not worked on before.
Primary Responsibilities
- Respond to equipment and vehicle breakdowns at active jobsites.
- Diagnose and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, starting and charging systems, drivetrains, brakes, air systems, and emissions-related issues.
- Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, fluid services, and scheduled repairs.
- Troubleshoot equipment problems directly with operators and foremen.
- Determine whether equipment can be safely repaired in the field or needs to be transported to the Edinburgh shop.
- Identify developing mechanical issues before they cause a breakdown.
- Complete basic welding, fabrication, hose replacement, and field repairs as needed.
- Coordinate parts and repair needs with the Edinburgh shop and outside vendors.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, preventative maintenance, service calls, parts, hours, and mileage.
- Keep the assigned field mechanic truck clean, organized, and properly stocked.
- Maintain personal tools in safe, professional working condition.
- Assist the Edinburgh shop team with larger repairs and maintenance when needed.
- Follow CASE safety requirements while working at jobsites, along roadways, and around active construction equipment.
- Communicate repair status, downtime, and equipment needs clearly to field and shop leadership.

Pay and Benefits
