American Traveler is hiring a Neuro Med-Surg RN for a 13-week night shift assignment requiring level 1 trauma experience and prior dedicated neuro unit experience.

Work in the Neuro Med-Surg Acute unit of a hospital environment
-
54-bed unit with 2 semi-private rooms
-
Patient population includes stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, general neuroscience cases, and some medical overflow
-
Nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:4-5 on days and 1:5-6 on nights

Nurse aide/patient care tech support present with ratios of 1:9-10 on days/evenings and 1:10-12 on nights

Charge nurse and house supervisor coverage 24/7, with charge nurse only taking assignments when short-staffed
-
House-wide telemetry monitoring using Philips monitors, so RNs are not required to read their own strips
-
High flow oxygen used occasionally for stable COVID patients
-
RNs required to titrate drips, including heparin gtt based on PTT
-
Uses EPIC EMR
-
12-hour night shifts
-
Every other weekend required (Saturday and Sunday, both shifts)

Every other holiday required

No call or standby requirements

Floating required in rotation with staff to general unit floors, with limited float assignments outside the general unit based on competency

Active IL RN license required
-
Current BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required

Minimum 1 year of nursing experience required

Level 1 trauma experience required
-
Prior experience on a dedicated neuro unit required

Heparin drip titration experience required
-
Prior travel nursing experience required; no first-time travelers considered

Negative drug screen required for all panels
-
Provide direct patient care to neuroscience and medical overflow patients on an acute med-surg unit

Troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment as needed, though RTs manage vents, CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow devices
-
2-day unit-specific orientation including computer training with an educator, followed by a precepted patient care day
-
No scrub color requirement, but tattoos must be covered while on duty and only ear piercings are permitted
-
Local candidates accepted, though a reduced local rate applies to clinicians with a permanent address within 50 miles of the facility
