About the Role
Assabet Community Education is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic American Sign Language (ASL) Instructor to teach adult learners in our community. Our students enroll for a variety of reasons, from enhancing workplace communication to supporting Deaf family members, preparing for interpreter training, or simply pursuing a new skill. The ideal candidate will be an engaging, culturally competent instructor who fosters an inclusive learning environment grounded in practical, real-world ASL communication.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and teach interactive, visually engaging ASL lessons for adult learners at varying proficiency levels.
- Incorporate Deaf culture, history, and community norms into instruction to ensure students gain a deeper, culturally informed understanding of ASL.
- Create and utilize a variety of instructional materials, such as videos, visual aids, signing activities, and digital platforms, to support language acquisition.
- Assess student progress through observation, receptive and expressive skill checks, and constructive feedback.
- Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment that encourages participation, confidence, and cultural awareness.
- Adapt instructional techniques to meet diverse learning styles and abilities.
- Maintain open, timely communication with the Community Education office.
Qualifications
- Fluency in American Sign Language.
- Strong understanding of Deaf culture and community values.
- Proficiency in English.
- Prior experience teaching ASL to adults is strongly preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

Pay: $38.00 - $45.00 per hour
