Prevention Specialist – Elementary/Intermediate- 10 Month
FT (40 hours per week)
Schedule: M-F, hours TBD, occasional weekends due to school events or projects
Location: work with the Elmira City School District
This position is for 10 months/year with July and August off.
Under the supervision of the Assistant Prevention Supervisor, the Prevention Specialist will utilize the Strategic Prevention Framework to support positive youth development and substance misuse prevention within the Elmira City School District community. This position works closely with students in grades 3–6, school administration, staff, families, and community partners to identify needs, develop prevention strategies, and implement evidence-based programming and interventions.
The Prevention Specialist will provide prevention education, facilitate classroom and family-based programming, support students referred through the Superintendent’s Hearing process, and collaborate with school and community stakeholders to promote healthy lifestyles and positive choices. Responsibilities also include developing presentations and educational materials, tracking program data and outcomes, participating in health fairs and community events, and serving as a resource on substance misuse prevention and wellness topics.
As part of a larger support services team, this role helps establish a positive and supportive presence within the school environment while providing prevention services, consultation, and expertise to students, families, and staff. Work hours generally align with the school day, with occasional evening or weekend events as needed. This is a 10-month position with July and August off.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Services, Human Services, Social Work, Community Health, or related field required
- Experience in substance abuse prevention, evidence-based programming, youth counseling, or community coalition work preferred
- Valid NYS Driver’s License required
- CPP or CASAC credential preferred; willingness to work toward credentialing within 3 years preferred

- Strong communication, presentation, facilitation, and relationship-building skills
- Ability to work effectively with youth, families, school staff, and community partners
- Knowledge of prevention strategies, mental health factors, and healthy youth development
- Strong organizational, technology, record-keeping, and time management skills
- Creative, flexible, collaborative, and enthusiastic approach to working with elementary-aged youth
- Perform other duties as assigned
Responsibilities
- Deliver prevention education and intervention programming to youth and families

Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
