Location: Northern CA, Bay Area, and LA East/Metro/Southern CA (multiple positions — this is our highest-volume specialty role)
Engagement Type: 1099 Independent Contractor — as-needed, assigned via approved Work Order
Compensation: $100/hour ($800/8-hour day), paid per class taught; course lengths range from 8 to 40 hours.
About the Role
This is our highest-demand specialty position. We’re looking for an accredited environmental trainer who can deliver AHERA asbestos courses, lead-based paint certification courses, and EPA RRP training across all California regions. Candidates who already hold all three accreditations are strongly preferred; we will also consider candidates with one or two of these credentials who are willing to obtain the others.
Responsibilities
- Deliver AHERA-accredited Initial and Refresher courses for Building Inspector, Contractor/Supervisor, Management Planner, and Project Designer disciplines.
- Deliver EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Initial and Refresher courses.
- Deliver Lead Inspector/Assessor, Lead Project Monitor, and Lead Sample Technician Initial and Refresher courses.
- Administer required hands-on/practical components and written exams per accreditation standards.
- Maintain accreditation renewals and submit training completion records to the applicable state/federal registries.
Required Qualifications
- For Asbestos/AHERA/Silica coursework: Cal/OSHA certification, OR a combination of 5 years of training and hands-on experience working with these substances.
- For Lead courses: certified by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) as a Certified Lead Instructor, with a minimum of 5 years of training experience.
- For EPA RRP courses: accredited by the U.S. EPA as a certified instructor, with a minimum of 5 years of experience training and working in renovation, repair, and painting (per IFB requirement).
- Comfortable delivering hands-on practical sessions (respirator fit testing, sampling technique demonstrations, etc.).
- Willing to submit certifications/accreditations to Sigma prior to the first scheduled class, and renew/re-submit any credential at least 10 business days before it expires.
Preferred Qualifications
- Holds all three credentials (Cal/OSHA asbestos, CDPH Certified Lead Instructor, EPA RRP) rather than one or two — reduces the number of trainers Sigma needs to schedule.
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC) designation.
- Experience training California state agency or school district (AHERA) staff.

Submit a resume and copies of current certifications/accreditations. Include the regions you can travel to and your available start date.
