ASSOCIATE ATTORNEY
Tanis Schultz is seeking a motivated Associate Attorney to join our energetic, client-focused law firm in downtown Grand Rapids. This is an excellent opportunity for a newly licensed attorney or an attorney with one to three years of experience who wants meaningful courtroom experience and exposure to multiple areas of law.
Our firm represents clients in a variety of matters, including workers’ compensation, personal injury, criminal defense, and Social Security disability. Candidates with litigation experience are preferred, but we are also willing to consider a driven, newly licensed attorney who is eager to learn and grow within the firm.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage a diverse caseload with support from the firm’s attorneys and staff
- Meet with clients and maintain clear, timely communication throughout their cases
- Conduct legal research and prepare pleadings, motions, briefs, correspondence, and other legal documents
- Attend hearings, conferences, depositions, mediations, and court proceedings
- Travel to courts, administrative offices, and other locations throughout Michigan as required
- Negotiate with opposing counsel and other parties
- Assist with case strategy, discovery, trial preparation, and litigation
- Track deadlines and maintain organized, accurate case files
- Help develop new client relationships and contribute to the continued growth of the firm
QUALIFICATIONS
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
- Active Michigan Bar license and good standing, or eligibility for admission with results pending
- Newly licensed attorneys and candidates with one to three years of experience are encouraged to apply
- Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and communication skills
- Comfortable appearing in court and advocating on behalf of clients
- Willingness and ability to travel throughout Michigan for court appearances, hearings, client meetings, and other case-related responsibilities
- Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license
- Ability to manage multiple matters, priorities, and deadlines
- Professional, dependable, organized, and attentive to detail
- A client-focused approach and a desire to provide high-quality legal representation
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- An existing book of business is welcome but is not required

SCHEDULE, TRAVEL, AND WORK LOCATION
This is a full-time, primarily in-office position based at our downtown Grand Rapids office. Some flexibility may be available depending on court appearances, client needs, and work responsibilities.
Statewide travel is an essential part of this position. The attorney must be willing and able to travel to courts and other locations throughout Michigan. This may include regular or occasional travel to Detroit, Saginaw, Gaylord, Kalamazoo, Lansing, the Upper Peninsula, and other areas of the state based on case assignments.
Applicants must be able to reliably commute to Grand Rapids, Michigan, or plan to relocate before beginning employment.

WORK LOCATION: Primarily in person in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with required travel throughout the state.
