GROUP LEADER OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSES
New York City Mission Society helps children, youth, and families in New York City’s poorest neighborhoods transcend the ills of poverty and create a cycle of success for generations to come. We have a dynamic portfolio of education, workforce development, prevention, youth development, and community-building programs.
The Group Leader facilitates and supervises afterschool programming that promotes academic success, social-emotional learning, and personal growth for participants. This position plays a key role in ensuring that all activities are engaging, developmentally appropriate, and aligned with the Mission Society’s goals and DYCD’s COMPASS program standards.

Salary: $19.25 per hour
Employment Status: Part-Time, Hourly 17.5 hours weekly
Program Description:
New York City Mission Society’s Afterschool and Summer Day Camp Program is dedicated to cultivating the personal growth and educational advancement of all elementary school participants. With a curriculum focused on academic support, STEAM, literacy, social-emotional development, physical activity and healthy living, introduction to college and careers, and life skills development, the afterschool program reinforces school-day learning in a safe and healthy environment. Programming is provided after school, on school holidays, and during the summer.
Principal Responsibilities:
● Lead and monitor students during all program activities and transitions, both on-site and off-site.
● Supervise a supportive and nurturing group environment for students that encourages learning and positive social interaction.
● Facilitate academic enrichment, social emotional learning, arts, and recreational activities for participants in a group setting.
● Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants at all times.
● Provide one-on-one and group homework help to support academic success.
● Develop and implement lesson plans that align with program goals and age-appropriate learning outcomes.
● Prepare and organize materials and supplies for daily activities.
● Maintain accurate attendance records and complete required reports such as sign-in sheets, accident, and incident reports.
● Foster strong relationships with students, families, school staff, and fellow program team members.
● Communicate regularly with parents and guardians during dismissal and family engagement activities.
● Attend required team meetings, training, and supervision sessions.
● Assist in organizing performances, showcases, and special events as directed by program leadership.
● Promote a positive program culture that reflects Mission Society’s values of respect, inclusion, and collaboration and the social emotional learning competencies of self-management, responsible decision-making, self-awareness, social awareness and relationships skills.
● Perform other related duties as assigned by the Program Director or Assistant Program Director.
Qualifications:
● High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s degree preferred. 18 years or older, with at least two years of direct experience working with children under age 13 years. Experience working with elementary school youth in an afterschool, summer, or educational setting is preferred.
● Demonstrated passion for youth development and education, with a commitment to continuous professional growth through active participation in training and development opportunities.
● Ability to lead engaging, age-appropriate activities that encourage creativity and participation.
● Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
● Ability to work collaboratively with peers, program staff, and school personnel.
● Experience developing and implementing lesson plans is preferred.
● Must demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and enthusiasm for working with youth.
General Requirements:
All staff are expected to be committed to the mission, vision, and values of Mission Society. Staff must comply with all DYCD, DOE, and Department of Health standards, and participate in mandatory training and professional development sessions.
Pay: $19.25 per hour
