JOB DESCRIPTION

SUPERVISED BY: Site Administrator
STATUS: Non-Exempt
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Regular – Part Year
JOB SUMMARY: The Cook is responsible for purchasing food and preparing meals for the
Head Start Program. The Cook is responsible for following menus prepared by the Nutrition
Consultant. The Cook will conduct activities to ensure compliance with all Head Start rules and regulations; licensing laws and all funding source regulations. The Cook will act in a professional manner at all times.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Complete all purchasing of food and supplies as assigned; adhere to a shopping list that has prior approval by the Health Specialist.
2. Prepare all meals according to menus approved by the Nutrition Consultant, in accordance with the Performance Standards, Child and Adult Care Food Program, and
Ohio Department of Education State Licensing Laws.
3. Prepare meals; serving well-balanced hot breakfasts, lunches and snacks.
4. Clean food preparation area, storage and eating areas daily before and after meals.
Follow cleaning schedule as outlined by the Health Specialist.
5. Wash, dry and store dishes and utensils.
6. Assure that food is placed in appropriate storage area.
7. Assist with meals and/or refreshments for parent activities and other program activities, as requested.
8. Promote parent involvement and encourage parent participation in program activities.
9. Assist in generating and tracking In-Kind.
10. Utilize technology to enhance capacity of agency.
11. Attend in-service training and other professional training opportunities as assigned by
Site Administrator.
12. Must understand community action and is committed to agency culture; acts as a role model.
13. Be effective at team building and creating positive morale.

14. Maintain the confidentiality of privileged information.
15. Be familiar with and have an understanding of the agency’s mission, strategic plan, goals and measures.
16. Maintain a neat, clean professional appearance and demeanor at all times; and exercise good health habits related to personal hygiene.
17. All other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Site Administrator.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/EXPECTATIONS:
1. High School Diploma or GED.
2. Experience with cooking for large groups.
3. Evidence of knowledge in preparation of food in an institutional setting including: ordering, pricing, inventory, storage, cleaning and maintenance of health department codes.
4. Must possess excellent written and interpersonal communication skills and strong organizational skills.
5. Must have computer experience and knowledge of all other office equipment.
6. Exhibit knowledge of business communication; must have excellent spelling and grammar skills.
7. Must have an understanding and awareness of the needs of low-income families.
8. Must have current certification in First Aid/CPR, Common Childhood Illnesses, Child
Abuse Recognition and Prevention.
9. Willing to travel out-of-town and overnight for training.
10. Must have access to operational automobile on a daily basis and proof of liability insurance.
11. Physical exam, background check and pre-employment and random drug screen, as required.
12. Must have physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
