Position Summary:
Our camp goal is that every camper leaves us a better, safer swimmer and more confident individual. This position is part of the Aquatic Staff team involved in all aquatic activities including swim lessons, recreational swim, and pool events. This position spends about half of the day teaching swimming and the other half lifeguarding, and ensures all swim activities are safe, positive, enriching, and fun in an inclusive atmosphere. Instructors are responsible for leading safe, skills based, and fun swim lessons for groups of 4-10 campers depending on age and swim ability. The wage range for this position is $20.00 – $21.00 per hour, depending on certifications and experience.
This is a seasonal position, running from June 22 – August 14. (Additional weeks in June and August can be contracted for interested parties)
Responsibilities:
- Using the Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program, teach safe, fun, and meaningful swimming lessons.
- Evaluate campers in your swim lessons and complete necessary paperwork for records and families.
- Uphold all policies and philosophies of the Fessenden Day Camp.
- Follow and uphold all state and local health and safety regulations and guidelines and those set by the Camp.
- Work with various age and skill levels providing appropriate instruction and behavioral management.
- Be part of regular maintenance, cleaning, and check of pool areas and equipment according to health and safety
protocols. - Supervise all swimming activities and enforce pool rules.
- Teach and guide campers and CITs to participate successfully and safely in all aspects of swim activities.
- Set a good example for campers and coworkers in all areas, including but not limited to health and safety, accountability,
fairness, organization, punctuality, following the rules, and sportsmanship. - Assist in emergency procedures and complete any necessary related paperwork.
- Participate in and assist in running camp events and initiatives.
- Meet/communicate regularly with direct superior regarding concerns, updates, challenges, and successes.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and Director.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Current certifications in Lifeguarding and CPR/AED/First Aid by a nationally recognized organization.
- Water Safety Instructor certification is strongly recommended.
- Desire and ability to supervise, lead, and positively manage campers and work with staff in a cooperative, team-oriented
camp atmosphere. - Strong communication skills.
- Possess excellent character, integrity, adaptability, patience, self-control, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor.
- Must be 17 years of age or older.
- Pass a MA State run background check including a CORI and SORI.
Job Requirements:
- Available 8:30am-4:00pm, Monday – Friday for the entire camp season and to attend all staff training sessions before and during camp season. There may also be at least two days during the camp season you will be required to stay late for
special events. - Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate health and safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
- Some high level activity which may include running, dancing, swimming and jumping.
- Occasional lifting, bending, and climbing stairs.
- Frequent talking, listening, walking, sitting, and standing.
- Demonstrate lifeguard and swimming skills including proficiency in all strokes, swim 500 yards, rescues, removals, CPR and first aid.
- Possess the visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp and swimming activities.
