Position Summary
The Field Service Engineer provides expert technical support for large-liter Caterpillar Motoren / MaK engines and related balance-of-plant equipment. This role combines hands-on troubleshooting, commissioning, warranty administration, customer advisory services, and coordination of complex repairs and overhauls in marine, industrial, and stationary power applications. The position requires strong mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical diagnostic skills along with the ability to lead field teams, produce professional technical documentation, and maintain excellent customer relationships.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide field service support for Caterpillar Motoren / MaK engines covering maintenance, warranty, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs across the customer and dealer network.
- Lead and support commissioning of engines, balance-of-plant equipment, industrial instrumentation, and SCADA systems.
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical issues on large diesel, HFO, MDO, and natural-gas engines.
- Utilize Caterpillar Electronic Technician (CAT ET) and other diagnostic software for component troubleshooting, reprogramming, and software updates.
- Organize, manage, and execute engine repairs, overhauls, and major service events in coordination with dealers, subcontractors, technical teams, and suppliers.
- Create clear, detailed technical reports for commissioning, repairs, warranty claims, failure analysis, and general service documentation.
- Advise customers on planned maintenance strategies, overhaul planning, and root-cause resolution of failures (in person, by phone, or email).
- Promote and coordinate service exchange programs to minimize customer downtime.
- Perform and assist with material testing, including nondestructive testing (NDT).
- Use precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges) to verify dimensional tolerances on reworked components.
- Lead or co-lead field assignments, including role assignment, technical presentations, and organizational planning for successful job execution.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Proven experience as a Field Service Engineer, Field Service Technician, or equivalent role supporting large diesel / gas engines (preferably Caterpillar MaK, Mitsubishi, EMD, or similar).
- Strong hands-on background in mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical systems on engines ranging from medium-speed marine/industrial units to locomotive and stationary generator applications.
- Experience with engine commissioning, overhauls, warranty processes, and technical report writing.
- Familiarity with diagnostic software (CAT ET or equivalent), electronic control modules (ECMs), and basic instrumentation/SCADA systems.
- Journeyman-level mechanical skills and comfort with precision measurement tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for customer-facing interactions and technical documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience with Caterpillar Motoren / MaK engines and/or 2G Gas Engines, GE, or similar large-liter platforms.
- Background in marine, industrial, or locomotive power systems.
- Experience processing warranty claims and interfacing with international engineering teams.
- Knowledge of torsional vibration analysis (TVA), load-bank testing, transfer switches, and generator systems.
- Intermediate fabrication, welding, or machining skills.
- Prior experience with nondestructive testing methods.
