Cooper | Tierney is looking to hire a paralegal or legal assistant.
We're a boutique law firm in Charleston with a team of 15, handling a diverse mix of corporate, litigation, tax, and real estate/transactional matters. Because we're small by design, our attorneys work closely with clients on sophisticated matters — and our support staff play a real role in how well those matters get handled. We're looking for a Legal Assistant who wants more than a "keep the calendar and file the paperwork" job. We want someone who thinks alongside our attorneys, not just behind them.
This role supports attorneys across multiple practice areas, so no two weeks look the same. One day you might be assembling a closing package for a real estate transaction; the next, preparing exhibits for litigation or organizing documents for a corporate deal. We're looking for someone sharp enough to move between these contexts, catch details others might miss, and get better at anticipating what's needed as they learn our practice.
What You'll Do
- Draft, proofread, and format legal documents, correspondence, and pleadings across corporate, litigation, tax, and real estate matters
- Prepare and organize closing binders, discovery materials, exhibits, and transaction documents
- Manage attorney calendars, deadlines, and court filing dates with precision
- Conduct legal and factual research to support attorney work product
- Communicate directly with clients, opposing counsel, courts, and title companies in a professional, polished manner
- File documents with courts and government agencies (e-filing and in-person as needed)
- Maintain organized physical and digital case files
- Assist with billing entries and client correspondence as needed
- Identify inconsistencies, missing information, or potential issues in documents before they become problems
What We're Looking For
- Strong critical thinking skills — someone who reads a document and understands why it matters, not just what it says
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- High attention to detail and follow-through; you catch the small things
- Ability to juggle multiple attorneys, practice areas, and deadlines without dropping the ball
- Comfortable learning new subject matter quickly (tax and real estate concepts, in particular, have a learning curve — we want someone who leans in rather than avoids it)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; comfort learning legal practice management and e-filing systems
- Prior legal assistant, paralegal, or law firm experience preferred, but we place real weight on judgment and trainability over years of experience
- Discretion with confidential client information
Nice to Have (Not Required)
- Familiarity with corporate transactional documents, litigation procedure, or real estate closings
- Experience with practice management software (e.g., Clio, MyCase) or e-filing platforms
- Notary public certification (or willingness to obtain)
Why Join Us
- Boutique environment — you'll know every attorney and client, not just a case number
- Direct exposure to sophisticated corporate, tax, and real estate work you won't find at other firms
- Room to grow as you demonstrate judgment and initiative
