Superintendent - Dry Utilities
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Superintendent - Dry Utilities to lead field operations for underground broadband and dry utility installations. The Superintendent will oversee the safe, on-time, and on-budget installation and rehabilitation of fiber optic cables, conduit systems, and related CATV/telecommunications infrastructure. This role requires strong construction leadership, coordination with project teams and stakeholders, and a hands-on approach to quality control, safety, and schedule management.
Key Responsibilities

Direct and supervise field crews and subcontractors installing dry utilities including fiber optic cables, voltage conduit systems, and CATV networks.

Plan, sequence, and manage daily field activities to meet project schedules and milestones; adjust resource allocation as needed to maintain progress.

Coordinate closely with project managers, engineers, utility companies, local authorities, and traffic control providers to obtain permits, utility locates, and access.

Inspect trenching, conduit placement, handholes, vaults, and aerial/underground terminations to ensure work meets design specifications and industry standards.

Ensure proper handling, routing, splicing, testing, and documentation of fiber optic installations; oversee OTDR and power testing as required.

Enforce and promote strict safety procedures and compliance with OSHA, NESC, NEC, and site-specific safety plans; conduct toolbox talks and safety audits.

Manage material deliveries, inventory, and quality control of components; verify as-built documentation and change orders in the field.

Prepare daily reports, progress photos, field logs, and assist in compiling punch lists and closeout documentation.

Provide on-the-job training and mentorship to crew leads and technicians; resolve field conflicts and technical issues promptly.

Monitor project budgets, labor productivity, and equipment utilization; recommend corrective actions to maintain financial and schedule targets.
Qualifications

7+ years of heavy civil or utility construction experience with a minimum of 3 years in a superintendent or lead field role.

Demonstrated experience with dry utilities including fiber optic cable installation, underground broadband networks, conduit systems, and CATV networks.

Strong knowledge of underground construction practices, trenching/backfill, handholes/vaults, CCTV, and voltage conduit installation.

Familiarity with fiber testing (OTDR, power meter), splicing practices, and telecommunications standards.

Proven ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and engineering drawings.

Excellent communication and leadership skills; experience coordinating with stakeholders, permitting agencies, and utility owners.

Working knowledge of safety regulations (OSHA, NESC, NEC) and experience enforcing site safety programs; OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 preferred.

Proficient with project management tools and reporting (MS Office, scheduling software such as MS Project or Primavera preferred).

Valid drivers license and clean driving record; ability to travel to and work at multiple field sites.

Physical ability to work outdoors in varying conditions and in excavation environments.

Preferred: Associate or Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field; certifications such as PMP, NICET, or fiber certification and CDL are a plus.

Salary
$120000 - $140000 USD per year
