Position Summary
As a Horror Escape Room Actor/Scare Actor, you will portray a variety of horror characters in our immersive escape room experiences. Actors interact directly with guests, perform scripted and improvised scenes, help advance storylines, and create memorable scares while ensuring every guest has a safe and exceptional experience.
This position requires creativity, adaptability, physical stamina, professionalism, and the ability to remain in character for extended periods. Every group is different, requiring performers to adjust their performance style while maintaining the integrity of the attraction.
Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesCharacter Performance
- Portray assigned horror characters with consistency, energy, and professionalism.
- Remain fully in character before, during, and after each game as directed.
- Memorize and deliver scripted dialogue while confidently improvising with guests.
- Use body language, movement, facial expressions, timing, and vocal performance to build suspense.
- Create believable, immersive performances that support each attraction's storyline.
- Adapt performances based on guest reactions while maintaining immersion.
Guest Experience
- Provide engaging, immersive interactions that enhance the guest experience.
- Read guest behavior and appropriately adjust scare intensity when necessary.
- Deliver fear-based entertainment without using profanity, offensive language, discrimination, harassment, or inappropriate conduct.
- Maintain professionalism when interacting with frightened, emotional, or disruptive guests.
- Help create an unforgettable experience while representing Egan Escape Productions in a positive manner.
Storytelling & Game Support
- Support the narrative and pacing of each escape room.
- Deliver clues, dialogue, and story elements naturally when required.
- Coordinate with Game Masters to ensure gameplay progresses smoothly.
- Maintain scene continuity and immersive atmosphere throughout each performance.
- Assist with resetting rooms between games to ensure attractions are guest-ready.
Safety & Operational Responsibilities
- Prioritize guest and employee safety at all times.
- Follow all company safety policies, emergency procedures, and evacuation protocols.
- Never intentionally touch guests.
- Monitor guest behavior and immediately report emergencies, unsafe conditions, damaged props, equipment failures, or security concerns.
- Maintain awareness of surveillance cameras, emergency exits, lighting systems, and operational procedures.
Teamwork
- Work collaboratively with actors, Game Masters, technicians, supervisors, and management.
- Attend scheduled rehearsals, training sessions, meetings, and performance evaluations.
- Accept coaching and performance feedback professionally.
- Assist fellow team members during busy operational periods.
- Help maintain a positive, supportive work environment.
Costumes, Makeup & Appearance
- Wear assigned costumes, masks, and wardrobe pieces correctly and professionally.
- Maintain costumes, props, and accessories in clean, working condition.
- Notify supervisors of damaged costumes, props, or equipment.
- Maintain appropriate personal grooming standards while in costume.
QualificationsRequired
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Reliable transportation and dependable attendance.
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and peak seasonal events.
- Ability to memorize scripts, character backgrounds, and attraction procedures.
- Strong improvisation and communication skills.
- Comfortable wearing costumes, masks, and theatrical makeup.
- Comfortable working in dark, confined, themed, and high-stimulation environments.
- Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure.
- Strong teamwork skills and willingness to take direction.
- Positive attitude with excellent customer service skills.
Preferred
- Acting, theatre, or performance experience.
- Haunted attraction or horror entertainment experience.
- Escape room experience.
- Improvisational acting experience.
- Dance, movement, stunt, or physical theatre experience.
- Voice acting or character performance experience.
- Customer service, hospitality, or entertainment experience.
Physical Requirements
This position requires frequent physical activity, including:
- Standing and walking for extended periods.
- Frequent bending, crouching, kneeling, crawling, climbing stairs, and reaching.
- Performing quick, controlled movements repeatedly throughout each shift.
- Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.
- Working 4–8+ hour shifts while maintaining energy and performance quality.
- Speaking clearly while wearing masks, costumes, or prosthetics.
Work Environment
Employees should be comfortable working in environments that include:
- Darkness and low-light conditions
- Loud music and sound effects
- Flashing or strobe lighting
- Theatrical fog and atmospheric effects
- Confined or themed spaces
- Uneven flooring
- Indoor and occasional outdoor attractions
- Halloween props, animatronics, and special effects
