POSITION TITLE: NURSE EDUCATOR - EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF NURSING EDUCATION & PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
MISSION STATEMENT:
The mission of the Nursing Education Department is to deliver comprehensive, compassionate, and quality patient care. The mission is consistent with the hospital’s mission, which is to deliver a wide variety of community oriented health services/programs.
SCOPE OF PRACTICE:
Plans, coordinates, provides and evaluates learning experiences for all levels of nursing staff to promote/maintain their competency. Assists in the promotion of the mission, policies and practices of the Nursing Department.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Effectively participates in the planning, development, implementation and
evaluation of educational programs, orientation and in-service training for the
department, in collaboration with other departments.
2. Consistently demonstrates the ability to establish appropriate educational and
departmental priorities in collaboration with Nursing Administration.
3. Demonstrates planning skills by ensuring adequate preparation for
classes/programs, including supplies educational materials and proper functioning
of equipment used in the department.
4. Designs learning programs skillfully, incorporating adult education principles,
reflecting the following at all times.
* Identified need
* Clearly stated behavioral objectives and expected learning outcomes.
* Content outline that matches objectives.
* Appropriate methodology.
* Adequate time allotment.
* Appropriate evaluation methods.
* Current bibliography.
5. Ensures that there are adequate relevant ongoing educational programs and
opportunities for all staff members of the department.
6. Provides core orientation classes for all levels of new nursing staff.
7. Consistently demonstrates the ability to educate and develop staff members for
their new roles and responsibilities.
8. Periodically reviews and evaluates education programs, feedbacks and revises as
needed.
9. Ensures the participation of all nursing personnel in educational programs are
properly documented.
10. Participates in facilitating relevant educational experience for nursing student
affiliates.
11. Develops and implements standards of the Nursing Department.
12. Accurately and consistently maintains unit designated staffs’ record in a shared drive with Education Department and unit Directors.
13. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the job descriptions and key requirements
for each position in the department.
14. Interprets, monitors, maintains professional standards and regulatory agencies
requirements.
15. Develops/maintains and re-assess staff competencies in nursing practice
including age-specific needs.

16. Demonstrates effective organizational skills in the preparation and completion
of work schedules.
17. Consistently available as an on-site clinical resource to staff.
18. Functions as a role model.
19. Communicates appropriate information inter and intra-departmentally within
the organization in a timely fashion to promote a smooth flow of departmental
activities.
20. Participates in performance improvement activities.
21. Participates in nursing/hospital committee.
22. Works flexible hours in assuming responsibility and accountability for providing Nursing Education.
23. Identifies own learning needs/sets goals towards improvement.
24. Consistently improves and updates practice including but not limited to change in hospital or professional trends and current literature.
25. Seeks additional formal or informal learning experiences and continuous education independently, such as attending conferences and obtaining certification.
26. Exemplifies the American Nurse’s Credentialing Center (ANCC) Pathway to Excellence standards as a role model to the nursing staff and during training programs
27. Fulfills responsibilities of position seeking assistance, as necessary.
28. Complies with St. Barnabas Hospital attendance policies.
29. Observes hospital dress code.
30. Promote a safe, cooperative and professional health care environment to ensure optimum patient care (as per HR Policy 113c).
31. Adheres to all hospital policies, procedures, rules and regulations, including but not limited to, absenteeism, ETIME, cellular telephone usage, dress code and rules of conduct.
32. Makes Customer Service a priority, treating customers (patients, visitors, and co-workers) in a professional manner exercising courtesy and tact. Effectively communicates with patients and others about SBH services in their area(s) of expertise or responsibility and ensures that concerns, questions or issues reach the right person(s) in SBH in a timely fashion.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Education Required: Master’s in Nursing or closely related degree required.
A. License(s) Required: Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in New York
State.
B. Experience/Skills Minimum of three (3) years experience with demonstrated competence in
Required: Nursing practice and leadership skills. One-year experience teaching adults in
Classroom and clinical area with demonstrated competence in program planning, principle and practice of adult learning is preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS: 37.5 hours per week with flexible hours to evenings and nights shifts planned inservice offerings.
