Position Overview
Express Concrete Breaking & Cutting is seeking an experienced Diesel Truck & Heavy Equipment Mechanic to maintain and repair our fleet of commercial vehicles and construction equipment.
The primary focus of this position is the diagnosis, repair, inspection, and preventive maintenance of:
- Semi-trucks and trailers
- Diesel utility and service trucks
- Excavators
- Skid steers and compact track loaders
- Construction generators
- Other diesel-powered construction equipment
This is primarily a shop-based position. The mechanic will help minimize equipment downtime, maintain safe and dependable vehicles and equipment, and ensure repairs and inspections are completed correctly and on schedule.
The ideal candidate is experienced with diesel engines, air brakes, hydraulic systems, electrical diagnostics, and heavy construction equipment and can work independently with minimal supervision.
Primary Responsibilities
- Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain semi-trucks, trailers, diesel utility trucks, and heavy construction equipment.
- Perform repairs and maintenance on excavators, skid steers, compact track loaders, generators, and similar diesel-powered equipment.
- Diagnose and repair diesel engines, fuel systems, cooling systems, transmissions, drivetrains, steering, suspension, and exhaust systems.
- Inspect, diagnose, adjust, and repair air-brake and hydraulic-brake systems.
- Troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical problems.
- Diagnose hydraulic leaks, pressure problems, cylinder failures, hose failures, and other hydraulic-system issues.
- Use computerized diagnostic equipment, multimeters, pressure gauges, technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and hydraulic schematics.
- Complete scheduled preventive maintenance, including oil and filter changes, lubrication, fluid inspections, belt and hose inspections, and component replacement.
- Perform commercial-vehicle and equipment safety inspections.
- Test repaired vehicles and equipment to confirm safe and proper operation.
- Identify required parts, obtain pricing, submit parts requests, and help maintain appropriate shop inventory.
- Maintain accurate repair records, inspection reports, service histories, and preventive-maintenance schedules.
- Help ensure fleet maintenance complies with applicable DOT, CHP, BIT, CARB, OSHA, and company requirements.
- Coordinate with dispatch, supervisors, and field personnel to prioritize equipment and vehicle repairs.
- Respond to occasional field breakdowns or service needs when required.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop and work area.
Minimum Qualifications
- At least five years of hands-on experience as a diesel truck, fleet, or heavy-equipment mechanic.
- Strong experience diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, air brakes, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and drivetrains.
- Experience working on semi-trucks, commercial trailers, diesel utility trucks, and construction equipment.
- Experience repairing excavators, skid steers, loaders, generators, or similar equipment.
- Ability to independently diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems.
- Ability to use computerized diagnostic systems and traditional testing equipment.
- Ability to read and understand wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, technical manuals, and manufacturer repair procedures.
- Knowledge of preventive-maintenance and commercial-vehicle inspection procedures.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to repair quality, safety, and documentation.
- Ability to prioritize multiple repairs and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Dependable attendance and punctuality.
- Valid California driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must successfully complete required pre-employment screening in accordance with applicable law.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Caterpillar, Bobcat, Freightliner, Peterbilt, International, Ford, or similar vehicles and equipment.
- Experience maintaining construction, demolition, excavation, or trucking fleets.
- Familiarity with DOT inspections, California BIT requirements, CHP standards, and CARB fleet requirements.
- Bilingual English and Spanish communication skills.
Tools
The mechanic should have the customary professional hand tools appropriate for an experienced diesel and heavy-equipment mechanic.
The company will provide specialty tools, larger shop equipment, required safety equipment, and company-designated diagnostic equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and work underneath trucks and heavy equipment.
- Ability to safely lift, carry, push, or move parts, tools, and equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
- Ability to work around moving equipment, diesel exhaust, grease, oil, dust, noise, and changing temperatures.
- Ability to safely perform repairs in the shop and occasionally at jobsites or other company locations.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is an experienced and dependable diesel mechanic who takes ownership of repairs, accurately diagnoses problems before replacing parts, maintains proper service records, and understands the importance of returning commercial vehicles and heavy equipment to service safely and efficiently.
Pay: $38.00 - $45.00 per hour
