Health Information Technician (HIM Specialist / Medical Records Technician)

Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Health Information Technician to join our healthcare team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for maintaining the accuracy, security, and confidentiality of patient health records while ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and organizational policies. This role supports physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals by managing electronic medical records (EMR/EHR), medical documentation, data quality, and health information systems.
This is an excellent opportunity for candidates with experience in Health Information Management (HIM), Medical Records, Electronic Health Records (EHR/EMR), Healthcare Documentation, Medical Coding, and Healthcare Administration.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain, update, and manage electronic and paper medical records.
- Review patient documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
- Ensure patient records are entered, indexed, and filed correctly within the EHR/EMR system.
- Process requests for medical records while maintaining strict confidentiality.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA and applicable federal, state, and local healthcare regulations.
- Assist with medical record audits and quality assurance activities.
- Support physicians and clinical staff with documentation requirements.
- Verify patient information and resolve discrepancies in medical records.
- Perform data entry with a high level of accuracy.
- Assist with health information reporting and record retention procedures.
- Collaborate with clinical, administrative, and billing departments.
- Support medical coding and documentation improvement initiatives as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality and security of protected health information (PHI).
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred).
- Experience in Health Information Management, Medical Records, or Healthcare Administration preferred.
- Knowledge of Electronic Health Records (EHR/EMR) systems.
- Familiarity with medical terminology, anatomy, and healthcare documentation.
- Understanding of HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality.
- Strong computer, data entry, and record management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CPC, CCA, or other Health Information Management or Medical Coding certification.
- Experience with ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding.
- Experience using Epic, Cerner, Meditech, Athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, or similar EHR systems.
- Experience in hospitals, clinics, physician practices, ambulatory care, or healthcare organizations.
